Anycubic Photon Printer Owners 造訪社團 » EVA

Hi folks!

I did a little programming over the weekend and now I would like to share the results with you.

What it is about

I have extended the awesome Photon File Validator Tool from Photonsters by the import of Prusa SL1 file format, so that the files generated by PrusaSlicer can be read in directly, without detour via ChituBox or other slicers that support .photon file format. Additionally I have implemented a Print Host, which pretends to be a Prusa SL1 printer to PrusaSlicer, so that the file can be sent to the Photon File Validator with one click, without a roundtrip via file system.

Motivation

The PrusaSlicer is - thanks to its excellent algorithms for auto-alignment and auto-support - very popular among Anycubic Photon users. Unfortunately, the currently common pipeline for print preparation is very cumbersome. Normally it works something like this:

1. Open the model in the MeshMixer or similar, hollow it out, put drainage holes in it and save it again.
2. Open the model in the PrusaSlicer, align it, generate support and save it again.
3. Open the model in ChituBox, adjust print parameters, slice and save.
4. Open model in Photon File Validator, correct errors and save.
5. Print

Even once, it's already time consuming. But if it turns out that there are still unsupported areas (and usually you will find this in the Photon File Validator, that's what the tool is for), you have to start from step 2 again. The whole open/save orgy over dozens of programs is very time consuming and just not fun. I wanted to change that.

Thanks to the new features in PrusaSlicer 2.2+ an external program for scooping out and drilling is no longer necessary, the slicer can do that by itself now. And thanks to the SL1 import into Photon File Validator you can do without proprietary slicers as an intermediate step, so it reduces the pipeline as follows

1. Open the model in PrusaSlicer, prepare it completely and transfer it to the Photon File Validator with a click on "Send to Printer".
2. Correct any errors in the Photon File Validator and save the .photon file.
3. Print

If there are some unsupported areas, simply switch to the PrusaSlicer window, fix the problem and click on "Send" again. This will reduce the time needed significantly.

Warning / Disclaimer

The software is still beta, and may contain smaller (and possibly larger) bugs. I do not take any warranty for functionality, possible damage to the printer etc. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Installation

Currently no installers are provided. You need an installed Java-Runtime in version 11 or later to run the program. Download the JAR file and start the program with java -jar PhotonFileValidator.jar from the command line.

The complete source code (only necessary for developers) can be downloaded from my GitHub repository.

Usage

1. Start Photon File Validator with java -jar PhotonFileValidator.jar from the command line

2. The main window opens.

3. In the main window, click on Settings The setup dialog opens.

4. Make sure that "Print Host Settings / Current State" shows "Print Host is Running". If a problem occurs, change the port and restart the Print Host.

5. Under "Print Host Settings / Output directory", select the directory where the generated .photon files will be saved.

6. Click the button "Show PrusaSlicer settings" and follow the instructions to set up PrusaSlicer.

Basically you only need to adjust two entries in the default Prusa SL1 printer profile:

1. Set gamma correction to zero. This disables the anti-aliasing in the PrusaSlicer, as the anti-aliasing settings cannot be applied at the moment. However, this is not a limitation, as the built-in calculation in the Photon File Validator provides much finer control over the anti-aliasing settings. The import of gamma correction values is the next item on my TODO list.

2 (Optional) In the "Print Host upload" section, set the "Hostname, IP or URL" field to "http://localhost:8080" (or the port number you set). This setting allows you to send the file to Photon File Validator with one click after slicing, without having to save and reopen it.

I have a question for the experienced resin people here: Printing flat and printing with supports. I *have* managed to print models standing flat on the build plate that were designed for support-less printing (on FDM) on my Photon using the Anycubic green resin (e.g. Akiko remix or Bree), but they simply seem to fail to stick using the Druckwege grey (opaque) resin and detach after the 8 base layers (110s exposure, as per DWs recommendation for the Photon and that resin!).

What is the general recommended approach? Should flat printing directly on the build be avoided if possible, ALWAYS suspending the lifted model in a support structure? And *must* I angle the prints when I have a flat elevated base surface, possibly giving away the option to print support-less?

Yes angle prints and uses supports

Stephen Colin Richie
2020-03-16 20:11:32

Generally, things are going to work better if you minimize the size of the layers above the base layers. You need lots of suction/adhesion on the base layers, but past that, too much suction will pull the model off of the plate (or tear it off of the supports), hence the need to elevate and tilt for larger models that cover more surface area.

Stephen Colin Richie
2020-03-16 20:13:22

The models I've successfully printed on the plate are small figures that include a broad, flat base and then taper significantly.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:17:07

Okay... But I tried the Zombie Hunter, which looks just like that, and that failed spectacularly: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:69709

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:18:22

Bree and Akiko remix, like said, did work, and these are also like that... But I have only tried with the transparent Anycubic resin, may not be true for opaque ones like the Druckwege gray I'm using now!

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:26:10

What I'm also still unsure about: Do large continuous slabs of support bases on the build plate adhere better or worse than ones that have holes in them every now and then? From a physics perspective, the latter makes more sense, cause the smaller the continous area that needs to be ripped off the FEP, the less the suction forces are - or what am I missing here?

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 10:14:29

If it's failing after your base layers, your regular exposure is too low. If it worked with one resin, it should work with all of them, once you get the settings for that resin dialed in.

The opaque resins usually need a higher layer exposure than transparent resins.

Google Photon exposure finder, and you'll have a great place to start.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:29:54

Fred Bey Druckwege has run their own test and provide ideal detailed settings for every color, layer height (!) and many printers (among those the Photon and Photon S).. So I just used those!

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 14:35:42

Daniel Kottmair unless they ran their tests wherever your printer is, they are just a good starting point. Delamination means you need higher exposure.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:39:28

Fred Bey True, my printer stands infront of a tilted window..

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:40:31

And thanks for the hint about delamination! ;-) i'm still learning so much about this..

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 14:43:30

No worries. We're all in this mess together. Lol

Lower temperatures will cause the resin to need longer exposures. Just a thought.

Suerte...

Hi all,
New and happy owner of a Photon S here!
I've designed a part for an old moped that I'm trying to print. I used auto support generation in PrusaSlicer. My print came out fine but not perfect. Where the supports were the part's surface looks like it was melted. The other side is perfect. See pictures.
I used Anycubic Aqua Blue resin, 0.05mm layer, 50/9s exposure, 8 bottom layers. I cured the part with 60W UV light for about 40 minutes (I guess this irrelevant).
Any clue how to make it better? More supports?
Thanks!

So I decided to play with my exposure settings a bit, and came up with some interesting results.I'm not trying to persuade anyone of anything here, and I feel obliged to point out that this is only done with one resin, and there are other factors (cleaning, post-curing etc.) that can have had some impact to., so my conclusions may not necessarily be relevant to everyone.

Anyhoo, the things that stood out most to me were:

1) This resin works pretty well across the range of exposure times, it is not 'that' sensitive.

2) 0.02mm layers actually gave slightly worse detail than 0.05mm layers, for this combination of resin, model etc.

3) I feel that 9s exposure for 0.05mm was best, compared to 8s at 0.02mm layers - i.e. very little difference. I didn't try 0.02 at 9s, but maybe that would have been better than 8s

4) In order to get some small positive details to show up (the spikes on the top), I had to choose settings that over-exposed other parts of the model. So there is no 'perfect' exposure time.

I have attached a few photos showing comparisons, for anyone who is interested. The STL is the Ameralabs calibration town (I'll put in a link), and the resin is PrimaCreator Value Grey. I printed 4 of these at a time to ensure the variations were not too random. My apologies for the slightly fuzzy picturees in some cases (the details are small and I cannot find my macro adapter, plus I was too lazy to go back and repeat photos of the worst ones ;o)

This first photo shows the difference between prints at 0.05mm ranging from 8s to 12s exposure time. I have previously been using 12s as my standard time for this resin at this layer height and have been happy with the results, but I am going to drop to 9s from now.

Phrozen Sonic Mini is .....

Just crazy unbelievable. The led’s are about 1.5 inches below the bubble glass, so it “throws” the light to the lcd. Their 95% uniform light is 100% correct. Mono chrome lcd cures the resin to at least 3x the strength as the photon s does, and at half the cure time. And this 3x strength is the same thru the entire area of the build plate.
Build plate is dead flat. Resin pools on top but I made a drip hanger tool.
Downside is the 67um vs 47um resolution is more noticeable then I thought it would be.
