Here's a hint: if liquid resin seeped into your tools (clipper etc) while clipping off supports and got them somewhat stuck and no IPA or greasing treatment helps, try pouring some acetone over it and excercise them! My spring-opening clipper opens again now!

Aceton will break thr resin down.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-29 19:14:17

Angus Sanders good to know. Apparently even cured resin, cause the IPA did NOTHING here, so it must've already cured..

Angus Sanders
2020-03-29 19:36:12

Daniel Kottmair yea just leave it to soak, takes a bit of time but it breaks it down.

Angus Sanders IPA? I tried soaking for hours to no effect..

Angus Sanders

Daniel Kottmair no leave it soaking in acetone. IPA doesn’t do anything really

I have a question for the experienced resin people here: Printing flat and printing with supports. I *have* managed to print models standing flat on the build plate that were designed for support-less printing (on FDM) on my Photon using the Anycubic green resin (e.g. Akiko remix or Bree), but they simply seem to fail to stick using the Druckwege grey (opaque) resin and detach after the 8 base layers (110s exposure, as per DWs recommendation for the Photon and that resin!).

What is the general recommended approach? Should flat printing directly on the build be avoided if possible, ALWAYS suspending the lifted model in a support structure? And *must* I angle the prints when I have a flat elevated base surface, possibly giving away the option to print support-less?

Yes angle prints and uses supports

Stephen Colin Richie

Generally, things are going to work better if you minimize the size of the layers above the base layers. You need lots of suction/adhesion on the base layers, but past that, too much suction will pull the model off of the plate (or tear it off of the supports), hence the need to elevate and tilt for larger models that cover more surface area.

Stephen Colin Richie
2020-03-16 20:13:22

The models I've successfully printed on the plate are small figures that include a broad, flat base and then taper significantly.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:17:07

Okay... But I tried the Zombie Hunter, which looks just like that, and that failed spectacularly: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:69709

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:18:22

Bree and Akiko remix, like said, did work, and these are also like that... But I have only tried with the transparent Anycubic resin, may not be true for opaque ones like the Druckwege gray I'm using now!

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-16 20:26:10

What I'm also still unsure about: Do large continuous slabs of support bases on the build plate adhere better or worse than ones that have holes in them every now and then? From a physics perspective, the latter makes more sense, cause the smaller the continous area that needs to be ripped off the FEP, the less the suction forces are - or what am I missing here?

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 10:14:29

If it's failing after your base layers, your regular exposure is too low. If it worked with one resin, it should work with all of them, once you get the settings for that resin dialed in.

The opaque resins usually need a higher layer exposure than transparent resins.

Google Photon exposure finder, and you'll have a great place to start.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:29:54

Fred Bey Druckwege has run their own test and provide ideal detailed settings for every color, layer height (!) and many printers (among those the Photon and Photon S).. So I just used those!

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 14:35:42

Daniel Kottmair unless they ran their tests wherever your printer is, they are just a good starting point. Delamination means you need higher exposure.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:39:28

Fred Bey True, my printer stands infront of a tilted window..

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-17 14:40:31

And thanks for the hint about delamination! ;-) i'm still learning so much about this..

Fred Bey
2020-03-17 14:43:30

No worries. We're all in this mess together. Lol

Lower temperatures will cause the resin to need longer exposures. Just a thought.

F*ck this.. I just spent 3 hours hollowing out, drainholing and manually supporting my print in Photon Workshop (cause i want AA!), carefully saving the .scene file every step of the way just in case it crashes again during slicing, only to find out that .scene files save NOTHING but the original models' size, placement and rotation when it eventually did crash. Hollowing gone, supports gone, drain holes gone. Now I need to do it all over again! HOW on earth are you supposed to save that stuff so you can continue preparing it later? When you save it as STL, it makes the supports permanent!

F * ck this..

My IPA curing ordeal: Okay, so I got myself a 72W UV nail station, but like with sun curing I still only get white goop instead of cured microflakes that I could easily filter out. Filtering the goop through a coffee filter gives me yellow IPA. It just doesn't seem to go clear anymore, is that normal? Any difference in using this IPA compared to "fresh" clear IPA for cleaning prints? (Resin used was Anycubic green which came with the printer!)

So, I finally got Antialiasing working on the Photon S by using the latest FW and Photon Workshop and exporting to .pws. Great! (Supports and hollowing still sucks compared to Chitubox)

Now, can anyone explain to me why we're not using AA to smooth the jaggies in Z, but only in XY? Sure, we can print at 0.025mm layers, but why should we double the print time when we could print at 0.05 with AA?

(And yes, I just checked, Z-AA is supported neither in Chitubox nor PWS!)

So... Can anyone explain to me why variable layer height (an awesome feature to get better prints in less time pioneered by Prusa in its slicer) isn't a thing with (M)SLA printing & slicers? I do realize exposure times need to go up the thicker the layers are, but what would be the problem of defining a factor for every resin that lengthens exposure time in tandem with layer height? I thought maybe the reason nobody does this is that longer exposure means that there's an xy "expansion" around the edges that would result in an uneven print over the z height... What are your thoughts on this?

Bad news, fellow resinheads: Still no antialiasing on the Photon S, even with the latest FW! I just tried reprinting something where I could spot the x/y pixelgrid before. For the test I used the Photon profile in Chitubox with 8x AA (file does actually have AA, i did a visual check and the filesize is accordingly bigger) and saved to a .photon file, which the latest FW can now also print.. But I can still see the xy grid, new print is not postcured yet, but I'd even say it looks worse!.. apparently the greyscale images in the .photon file get converted back to monochrome again!
Anyone else done any testing? Or found another way to get AA on the Photon S?
