Is a resin high-temp enough to print a filament drive for a FDM printer? I don't think they get very hot. But it sits on the stepper motor so gets a little hot.

Hi
Sorry to bother you guys again but I am new with the photon and I need some help ?
I have a question.

Let’s suppose I want to print something like the screenshot below. With an FDM printer of course I will need supports. But with the photon I don’t think is required because the top part is flat and will get solidified ‘all together’ and is attached to the two columns, not floating.

Is that right or I will need supports anyway?

Thank you

I finally purchased a good air purifier to put in my printing room. With2 FDM printers and the Photon running I was really suffering. It has been running for about 9 days. The smell of resin and printing has been reduced like 95%. My wife does not complain, kids don’t complain. Fantastic!

I've seen a lot of conversation about resin temperatures, even people putting heat pads around the printer and insulating them. I'm assuming certain types of resin have more problems than others? Because so far I've seen no evidence of low temperatures affecting print quality with Anycubic resins.

I've had this Anycubic Grey resin left in the vat and untouched for about 3 weeks, which we know is perfectly fine. After a quick stir, I printed this last night and it's turned out perfect. Garage ambient temp is 3-7c.

So the question is... is all the fuss about temperatures aimed at specialist resins (casting etc) or is it just a load of rubbish?

My experience with FDM printing and many FDM groups is that there's an awful lot of people who talk utter nonsense and you and up with thousands of people thinking its got to be done a certain way.

Question for the group....

My photon is on its way to me, but I'm concerned about fumes.

Is there any reason not to cut a hole in the case of the printer and attach a small fan and ductwork to create negative pressure inside the printer and extract fumes out he duct? I'm thinking a 60mm or 80mm computer fan.

I'd like to be able to use it in the living room. I have a nice work desk set up with my fdm printer on it and space for the photon too

Finished design at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3337492

Version 2: solid bottom now so when you are emptying the vat there is no chance of getting resin fingers on the fep. That's happened to me more so than putting it on paper.

Version 3: Made it shallower to save printing time. Also some grips so you don't put your gloves on the back of the part, that should save your desk or worktop getting resin on from your gloves.

Version 4: Full box enclosure for second vat storage. Implementation of a rubber seal also. This may be difficult lol
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find it a bit annoying when cleaning the vat, placing it down on tissue paper or paper I've sometimes ended up getting tiny bits of resin on the bottom of the fep. Don't ask me how but it happens. I designed this simple holder so it never happens again! Will be printing on FDM Tomorrow ?

Properly protected now. Also I'm buying a second vat to have it easier to switch colours, this will block the light and protect it from dust/resin. A lid on top with it also.

If anyone would like this STL I will upload it and share once I confirm it is the right size printed. Don't you just love having an idea, be it a simple one and making it into a physical object ? ?

Happy printing people!!!!

Ok Folks, so word of the Photon X is spreading and of course AnyCubic is asking for what we'd like to see in the latest version. I've seen many people here asking for larger build volumes (some at around 20cm cubed!) however I feel like this would be a pretty bad idea and here's why:

So DLP printers operate fundamentally different from FDM. Increasing build area isn't as simple as increasing the length of a few rods and cutting a larger PCB. the size of the screen must be made bigger, as does the resolution of the screen. Currently, the Photon uses a 1440p screen to give us the high res results we currently enjoy, but if you then stretched those pixels out to 20cm cubed, it would be incredibly low resolution and terrible print quality.

Now let's say we increase the resolution of the screen to match this large increase. goodness knows how high the resolution would have to be to maintain the consistent level of quality seen with current prints, which would cost goodness knows how much and would likely require their own screen manufacturing efforts (driving the price of our beloved 'cheap' DLP printer through the roof).

NOW what we could instead do, is focus on and improve upon what currently makes the Photon such a great printer. the level of quality of the prints that this machine pops out are outstanding for the price but can, of course, be improved. it's very possible that a higher resolution screen (with similar size) could be purchased 'off the shelf' by Anycubic, allowing them to introduce higher X/Y resolution with very little cost. If this were to be combined with an updated Z rail that prevents wobbling like the eagerly awaited mod on this forum, then I believe that Anycubic would be on winning track to win over the current fans as well as new hobbyists into our community.

Of course there are other features such as larger front screen size, better venting etc that are being discussed, however i just wanted to share my 2 cents on the subject.

thanks for reading!

TL;DR

DO focus on improving the quality of prints at an affordable price by using higher resolution screens 'off the shelf' as well as a better z rail. Z rail could be lengthened too to allow for taller prints.

DON'T focus on wider build volume. bigger screens will mean little to no jump up in X/Y resolution. Resin is expensive as it is, if you want BIG prints then use FDM or cut your parts up to save all the litres of expensive resin.

Anycubic

Hello, I am new to the group I usually print FDM (for the last 5 years) but I convinced the office to buy a DLP to test... since I have the machine I did 10 prints and had no problem they all came out nicely...

my problem is to get used to the support system, the upside down print and last but not least the Anycubic Slicer that seriously needs some improvement

(I rather not use Meshmixer it freezes my computer ALL THE TIME)

My questions are:

1) the art of support. There is a site or a book where someone analyzes many printed object pointing out where supports are critical?
I prefer to place them semi-manually usually but I lack a deep technical knowledge or experience of when and where we REALLY need them

2) How to nicely clean a piece from supports any special advice I use tiny curve scissor and my hands are in pain for the last 4-5 days and almost got blinded by a piece jumping in my eye

3) Anycubic slicer: I like to work with automatic support then remove most of what I don't think is needed then add some for the final touch but it is really... really hard to work in it!!!
there is any secret command like slicing&support like in simplify3d

As you can see in the picture I got better and with TEST 4 I was able to preserve most of the detail in TEST 2 hands was floating as well as the face tentacle...after printing test 4 I notice 4-5 support were to close to the body and difficult to remove but very hard to select and move in Anycubic slicer
