My test of anti-aliasing in the 4.2.17 beta firmware. This is AC white, at 0.05mm layer height, 8s exposure, using the test file Sen linked to the other day. If you try this, print it at at least 2x scale. I didn't realize how small it was until I'd already sliced them both and printed one, LOL. That made it tough to light and photograph, but even at this small scale you can tell there is a difference. But note, it doesn't help top surfaces. If you think about it, it can't - the printer is not capable of printing a section of one layer at anything less than the full layer height. Edit: Added a couple crops to make it easier for mobile users to see what's up.

Why is the 4.2.17 AA firmware .zip package 200MB? That's 500x the size of the previous two releases.

I am still on a mission to find relatively affordable ways to clean parts that minimize the reliance on IPA. IPA in a heated ultrasonic bath is a no-go for me. I found moderate success with Yellow Magic 7, and also with home grown combinations of 20% IPA and industrial detergents. Those are pretty good, but not as good as straight up IPA. I think I can do better.

I am nominally a chemist by training so I used my ACS credential to do a literature search yesterday and learned a bunch. Commercial SLA outfits seem to use and recommend di(propylene glycol) methyl ether (AKA DPM, AKA glycol ether, AKA DOWANOL-DPM (TM)). That comes in at around $50/gal. Along those lines I found commercial solutions used in the UV ink and silk screening industries that contain variations on that, such as the tri(propylene glycol) methyl ether, or di(propylene glycol) butyl ether. Those solutions run in the $60/gal range. That industry also uses esterified soy fatty acids (essentially bio-diesel) as a solvent. If those work then in principle they could be economical and safe to use, but I don't think they are water soluble which could be a caveat.

As confirmation of what I learned, I later discovered that the highly-praised but $160/gal (in the US) ResinAway product contains propylene glycol ($30/gal) as the top ingredient, and the glycol ether as a secondary ingredient (along with long-chain alcohols - which I believe are the main ingredients in Yellow Magic 7). So I may be on the right path. I have some of these chemicals on the way, for additional tests.

All - I'm at the beginning stages of investigating post-processing techniques that remove or significantly reduce reliance on IPA as a solvent. It stinks, is highly volatile, flammable, and difficult if not impossible to effectively recycle.

I discovered the pictured product, "Yellow Magic 7" from Bradley Systems, due to its use by a few people in the SLA printing community. I contacted the company and they kindly sent me a 1qt sample for testing with DLP resin.

This weekend I ran a small scale test and confirm it does a very decent job post-processing, if you use it in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. I heated the bath to 60C, turned on the sonicator and left about a dozen small, hollowed parts to clean for 10 minutes. I followed this up with rinse/agitation in hot tap water. Good results, and at ~$30/gal is much cheaper than ResinAway (which I have never used and am not claiming on-par performance - YMMV).

The only potential issue is that it doesn't appear to solvate all of the resin - you end up with little synthetic vesicles of resin floating around in the detergent, which can stick to the vessel walls, and potentially could make their way back onto the parts upon removal, etc. A silver lining might be that if you cure the bath with UV light I imagine those vesicles may solidify and just crash out of suspension allowing you to recover almost 100% of the cleaning solution in a fairly pristine state. But more testing is needed to confirm this...

I still have other even less expensive industrial cleaners to try. And based on some droplet testing I initially did, I may also try some IPA/detergent mixtures as adjusting the ratio appears to allow you to fine-tune this vesicle-creation property.
