We followed some people's advice from my last post and and are having an easier time with Blender. However, we still can't seem to get all the dice numbers to work, specifically the number 4 and occassionally the number 9. We've tried using different fonts and I've even manually modeled a 4. Everytime we go to use a Boolean modifier to add it to the dice body there is an error. First, the sides of the number were missing. I removed double vertices and it was better but still portions were cut out/missing. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem?

Hmm, to be honest, yes i have... When i run into a such roadblock with blender, i just begin again from nothing. Many times the issue with boolean is something that you dont see or have missed somewhere and to find it takes more time than remodeling th e whole thing. Look for doubles in vertices, two points in the same location, also check the normals, in edit mode press A key, then select mesh from the tool bar, normals and recalculate outside, if the surface is not pointing out, the boolean doesnt work correctly. Again mesh and then clean up from where merge by distance, to get rid off double vertices.

Hope that helps...

If you're using a modifier to do the boolean operation, make sure scale and rotation is applied to both objects (that's the Blender equivalent of "have you tried turning it off and back on again?" because it solves so many problems)

Thats the tutorial we started with. All the other numbers and the custom 1 and 20 work fine.

Also, when a boolean doesn't look the way you expect it to (whether using the modifier or within edit mode), try setting the overlap/merge threshold value to zero.

Keep at it, i hope you get it worked out.

Also, might try to model the number four to the face on the dice body, that way you can be sure to have the shape in the object without using boolean... Hard to give more indepth advice here.

There ya go...

when you convert the text to a mesh, and extrude it, do make sure the normals are okay... Edit mode, Mesh > Normals > Recalculate outside. do the same for the dice body after boolean...

Question for the 3D modelers in the group. What modeling software would you recommend besides Blender? Both my wife and I find Blender to be.....frustrating.

By no means a pro, but coming from blender I found sculptris EXTREMELY easy to use. It’s likely somewhat lacking in advanced functions for pro users though

For very easy cura 14.7 and for better experience cura 4.4

Fusion360 for hard surfaces

Paul Grover

3D Builder. It was designed for 3D printing.

Jake Gilmore

Sculptris is great for organic forms and is more powerful than you'd think for how simple it feels and looks. I used it for a long time before eventually getting zbrush

Tbh, blender is super frustrating - until you know some shortcuts. Then it’s actually quite good. Though also depends what you want to do...

I have no experience at all outside of 2d photoshop, and even that is like basic novice level.

Should I throw my head against the wall and learn blender or throw my head against a different software wall?

I'd like to sculpt minis, alternate versions of existing sculpts to being with.

Simple modelling can be done with SketchUp

Marcel Hansen

I use 3ds max, but I can get it because of my work for a private consumer it's too expensive

Jared Rushton
2020-03-30 12:25:10

If price was no object, I would get SolidWorks in a heart beat. I have over 10 years experience with it between school and jobs. For some reason, Blender's operations are the opposite of intuitive for me.

Shan Glor

Sketchup, you can see the dimensions.

Modify your hot keys to be non frustrating. When you are saying frustrating what are you relating that to ?

As a modeller who is proficient with Maya Max Houdini Zbrush 3d coat silo, Blender does a really solid job.

Jared Rushton

We're currently working on creating models for dice. Blender's method for adding numbers is very non-intuitive and lengthy. It also seems very prone to errors depending on the font we use.

Lane Shutt

Blender is what they refer to as an "expert friendly" software package. For a free product it is surprisingly powerful, but has a steep learning curve because they have done little to make it easier to us.

There are two types of modeling, mechanical a nd organic surface. Programs like SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and Autocad excel at this type of modeling. Organic modeling is easier with 3DS Max, Blender or Zbrush. The reason for this is that mechanical models are mostly done as a Solid Models and organics are sculpted from a Mesh (a surface composed of polygons).

One modeling package that does both fairly well, but not spectacular in either, is Rhino 3D. It also has the advantage of lower cost and a very attractive Student license (both price and terms).

Sterling Osment

Jared Rushton yes the font to mesh can be finicky, if you add a bevel after to tidy the edges and run a clean up and merge verts on any stragglers you should end up with a tidy mesh to bool from the dice surface.

try tinkercad.com ( primatives & booleans) if blender is too hard. Zbrush is a simpler option as well. I personally like blender and 3D Studio Max.

Neal Conway

I do use Tinkercad but I find it very limiting with its inability to do things like complex, organic, curves like boat hulls etc.

From what I learned so far with Blender, you definitely need to follow some tutorial on YouTube.

Kind of a Longshot, but I have been using Gravity Sketch on my Oculus VR. Also just found out about a free organic modeling PC software called Mudbox from Autodesk. It looks promising. In the end, 3D builder has been able to make anything I sculpt solid and printable.

David Newton
2020-03-30 14:27:27

I suppose depends what you are trying to model, i use z brush for pretty much everything now including game and prints

Paul Grover

Did I mention, it's free with Windows 10.

Stefan Giudici

What kind of modeling? Different tools for different things...

Danny Murphy

Change blender to Industry compatible in the Preferences and its a whole lot more intuitive.

Gabe Snooks

Stick to Blender, there is a hefty learning curve, but it is a commercial grade program available for free. You will learn modeling, but you will be able to do animation too.

Mark Browning

Jared Rushton try using the 3D package that comes with windows, is it 3D. Now, for adding fonts and things it’s great, one thing I think many 3 d modellers do is use different programs for different jobs it’s free as is mesh mixer that can also solve many problems

Matthew Overbeck
2020-03-31 02:04:39

Try meshmixer for more of an introductory easier to approach one. You will probably want it for cutting up larger models anyways.

Jack Burton
2020-03-31 02:14:12

I can’t recommend Onshape highly enough. Made by former Solidworks employees. Really nice, browser based, and free as long as you don’t mind your models being public.

Mark Anderson
2020-03-31 05:20:30

Fusion 360 is more CAD oriented, but is free for personal use and has solids functions that should make this pretty straightforward. Lots of tutorials on the internet for it and it outputs STL.

So, I looked through the group files and didn't see what I was looking for. Has anyone found any information on the cured strength of the different resins? I have an idea for some clamps but want to use the best resin for that job.
