No problems printing a thin item on the build plate. Go that down to a science..

Curing on the other hand, totally different story. It warps every time I put it in my light box...

Any suggestions?

Cure both sides equally, the resin shrinks a little bit as it cures. A rotating platform or mirror help.

Michael Alexander Caddick
2020-03-30 12:39:19

Jason Pedersen I use a rotating jewellery stand under a plastic plant pot lined with 5m of UV leds. A couple of minutes number that and the cutting is done, and lightly suntanned lol

Jason Pedersen
2020-03-30 12:41:37

Michael Alexander Caddick easy setup, it sounds. Been toying with building something so I'm less reliant on the AZ sun, for consistencies sake.

You could also try curing in water, I find it speeds up the process and helps with a whole variety of things.

Scott Pavlich

Cure it in water...it’s the way of ensuring a good even cure and prevents warping

Evan Boone
2020-03-30 13:15:56

place the thin object on a bit of glass. place another, heavier object on your print to keep it flat. aim a uv lamp up from under the glass. flip it after the one side is done curing and repeat for the other.

Cure it on the plate

Tom Howley
2020-03-30 13:33:09

when I have that problem I put the item into the sink and then add hand hot water for a few moments. I can then drain the water and push the warped item onto the flat bottom of the sink as the hot water makes the print more malleable.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have an idea at least what to try.

Does anybody know why this is happening when using Monocure? Seems to occur on longer print times. Its not a leveling issue as it builds up after a couple of hours into the print

Martin Martinez
2020-03-30 10:49:08

Dave Smith is there any solution to that?

Brendan Wood

Increase the Base exposure time in whatever program you are using to slice. It could be that the bottom layers aren't sticking to the build plate enough.

Martin Martinez
2020-03-30 11:41:11

nah, these are building up on non print areas.Starts printing fine and builds up, seems light is bleeding out

Scott Pavlich yea getting left behind and still getting a print (crap print). Seems like yes, screen about to go

Scott Pavlich
2020-03-30 13:12:47

Anyone have problems like this with light bleeding? Is it the screen or the board? Suddenly I am getting failed prints from what appears to be light bleeding. I checked my screen and it seems I have found my issue. Now what to do about it?

So after doing my first print last night which was alright until I snapped the leg re.oving support. My photon has now developed 2 problems today. 1 it pops up with memory card error. If I tap the confirm it works fine if not it stops the print. A pain as I have to sit the watching it. 2 it randomly drops power for about 1 sec then boots back up.

Anyone come across these problems before? Any help is greatly appreciated

First use a new USB stick if you're using the one that came with the printer. Second make sure if you're plugged into a surge protector, 1. It's new 2. It's not overworked

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:53:26

the USB isn't new but is a sandisk one. and currently plugged straight into the mains in the garage. only had the light and printer running today compared to last night with the heater and laptop as well. or do you mean i need a surge protector?

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:55:09

Joe Bone sounds like you need a new surge protector for just the printer. This happens a lot on normal printers and large current drawing devices

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:56:02

will have a look and sort one suprised as it printed fine last night but not today

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:56:52

Joe Bone is it plugged directly into the wall?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:57:53

yeah directly into a mains socket.

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:59:01

Joe Bone GFI or regular?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:59:59

Regular 3 pin outlet

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 22:08:55

Joe Bone ok then that shouldn't be it. Let's talk about temperature. You said it's in the garage. Does the power brick have a sufficient amount of airflow across it or is it buried behind a counter or something?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 22:17:00

Sat on the counter behind not a huge amount of air flow but also bloody cold out there atm

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 22:23:05

Joe Bone so I would guess, either it's a fluke or a possibly bad power supply. If it's the power supply it'll start happening more often

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 22:31:58

Happened about 4 times today. Have given up for now until I got advice Haha. Will get looking for a new power supply was a secondhand photon anyway.

Paul Yanzick
2020-03-29 14:23:53

And can you be more specific about your 'problems'?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 14:24:43

Paul Yanzick I just changed my FEP and at the time of printing the plate sticks to the fep and you hear it peel off I guess that makes the print fall

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 15:49:13

Gus Alfaro the pop sound when printing is usually a good sign. It's the print pulling off the fep and sticking to the plate right. Have you had failed prints with it though?

Paul Yanzick
2020-03-29 16:29:02

Gus Alfaro Peeling noise is normal, especially at the start since your build plate is making contact with the entire FEP. As Andrew has asked, are the prints actually failing? What exactly are the 'problems' you are experiencing now?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:05:59

Andrew Coulombe the print falls and I don't know why? I put thick support and it falls

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:07:41

Gus Alfaro is it breaking away from the supports, or coming away from the plate?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:09:20

Andrew Coulombe the supports are broken

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:11:43

Gus Alfaro sounds like a suction issue with the print. Try to re-angle the print so there's less contact with the fep. Also sometimes too many supports can cause issues themselves. Could you post some pics of what you're printing and your settings?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:13:31

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:14:11

Gus Alfaro ah cool that's what I use to. Here's my settings

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:19:21

Andrew Coulombe why 12 and 10.5?

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:20:43

Gus Alfaro I've just found it works for what I print. Just been doing these today.

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:21:51

Here's a picture with supports for the guy in the middle. Didn't use a lot, and printed pretty perfect.

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:22:58

5.5 on the exposure to me would be something I'd use on transparent resin cause it takes much less.

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:24:59

Paul Yanzick before changing the FEP the prints came out like this

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:25:51

Gus Alfaro hmm is this the first change of your fep?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:26:26

2020-03-29 22:27:12

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:27:34

Ok may be a silly question, but did you remove the film on the fep before installing it? I know I didn't with my first ?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:30:21

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:31:33

Gus Alfaro ok few more ideas then. Did you hollow the model?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:32:44

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:33:23

And add drainage holes?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:33:55

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:34:47

Sounds like you're doing everything right then. Have you tried printing something you know already works ?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:37:05

Andrew Coulombe yes, I printed the head that I showed and some supports have been cut

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:39:23

Only other thing I can think is the resin being the issue then possibly? I had problems with some prints before, which then started printing fine after I used new resin.

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:41:13

Andrew Coulombe ? ? ? you're right

Andrew Coulombe
2020-03-29 22:42:55

Gus Alfaro well hopefully I've been some help. That's about the limit of my knowledge on printing ?

Gus Alfaro
2020-03-29 22:43:57

Andrew Coulombe Thanks a lot

Jeremy Mongoose Harris
2020-03-30 08:24:48

Ya. Are you asking if changing gave me any problems of the fep giving me problems before I canged?
The presses is a little bit but a YouTube vib should get you through. The fep itself can get a little cloudy if it's really bad you will notice a resolution drop on your prints, nothing extream
Should only change if its leaking

EDIT: my LCD screen is probably failing. After the classic "turning off and back on again" made the UV test actually show. So we'll see if that will actually work for now. I've had the printer for like 3.5 months now.
I'm having some problems for the first time since I bought it
I'm using Anycubic gray, 90 secs with 6 base layers, and 6 seconds normal exposure time. I'll get a job done, and then the next job fails.
Does there need to be a cool down time between jobs? Inside the printer was a bit warm.
I did have to reset the z=0 once because for some reason it wasn't going all the way down. I hope something isn't wrong with my printer.
I've had several jobs within the past couple days end up like the picture below.

Chris Crute
2020-03-29 03:23:13

I had something similar and what I discovered was that a job would complete but then the next would fail because of resin left on the fep from the successful one. Not 100% cured but enough to make it fail.

Turned out the LCD was failing and was Curing a 'shadow' on the fep between layers when it should have been dark.

Changed the screen and it was fixed, improvement in print quality too!

Benjamin Matthew Harding
2020-03-29 03:28:02

That might be it. I've also emptied the vat and the fep looked fine. This is the exposure test

Benjamin Matthew Harding
2020-03-29 03:31:27

I think my screen failed. I turned it off and back on again and then it was acting normal...? That's so weird

Chris Crute
2020-03-29 03:34:01

Benjamin Matthew Harding mine looked fine on the exposure test but it was clesrly letting UV through when it shouldn't have.

Benjamin Matthew Harding
2020-03-29 03:37:33

Hmmm.. what's weird for me is it wasn't doing any uv light and then after turning it off and back on, it showed up again. If this doesn't print then I'll have to get a new screen for sure

Chris Crute
2020-03-29 03:39:53

If your screen is old (mine was 14 months old with no dead areas) you may be best doing it anyway, the improvement in print quality very noticeable!

Benjamin Matthew Harding
2020-03-29 03:41:05

It's only 3.5 months old, as I got it for a Christmas gift for myself.

Chris Crute
2020-03-29 03:42:16

Hmmmm, there is no saying how long each one lasts. I've heard of people having them degrade in that time though. I was just lucky.

Since it hasn't yellowed at all, it may be possible to increase he exposure a bit more.

looks like the circle could be fixed by putting a heavy support at the lowest point and standing it up a bit straighter.

The lines on the flat part are layer lines. that could be reduced by using antialiasing or standing up straighter

Mi Ha
2020-03-29 03:23:27

Your supports are off. They should support the edge towards the bottom as well. You can remove maybe 70% of the rest because they don't serve any purpose, but that bottom one at the lowest edge is crucial.

Nipuna Gunarathne
2020-03-29 03:24:21

You need to support the lowest points

罗西晟
2020-03-29 04:29:42

Like the people before me already stated, your supports placement is wrong... You need to place a support at the point closest to the buildplate, in this case right on the edge.
As far as we can see in the pictures, your support is connected to the par t higher than where the lowest point of the part is.
This causes the edge 'to curl up' because it actually stays on the FEP until the rest of the part is printed and pulls it off the FEP.

I'm still pretty new at this. I've only support probably 4 models, and they came out well. But I want to print some items that are like chests for D&D and I'm wondering about hollowing. I use ChiTuBox which, since I do mostly manual supports, has worked great. But I've never tried hollowing out a model because I haven't needed to. How big does an item need to be before you should really hollow the thing out?

Richard Humble

All hollow

Chris Robinson
2020-03-28 23:54:04

Chris Robinson hollowing is easy. Supporting all the new islands that can be created internally - that's a bit more fun.

Richard Humble

No islands. Just thicken up the shell until they vanish.

Nathan Kopp
2020-03-29 12:36:44

Hello! I really, really need your help here.

Here's a nice collection of my latest print failures, all from one and the same print xD If you want to help, please read more :)

I have Anycubic Photon, the original, and I've had it for a few months now, 4 bottles of resin used with little to no problems. The bed is levelled, FEP makes a nice drum sound when poked and isn't broken, temperature is acceptable (~18 °C), resin is Elegoo Grey, settings worked for all this time perfectly, as well as supports, no file errors, or corruption detected. What's more, these models were printed before in similar configuration.

The failures have all been marked, but I can point them out individually.

1. The whole bottom-left area seems to not have stuck to the plate, and I can see individual layers not sticking to each other too.

2. At one point, one third of the plate just stopped printing for a while, which happened one print before in the same place at a different height. The other part was stuck to the FEP, but a big chunk was missing in between.

3. At the bottom layers, printing seems to have moved to the right a little, creating a weird warp.

4. There are 2 or 3 very visible layer lines on the cylinder, maybe some warping happened there too.

Similar failures also happened the last time I printed something, but I thought it was file corruption, so I printed again. Right now I don't want to print again until I know what went wrong.

Maybe you had those problems before, and know the reason? Please tell me what you think, and what I should do. Thank you for your help!

Daniel Kelly
2020-03-28 00:15:52

I think your room temperature should really be a bit higher - around 23C-25C optimal. Could also be that the resin needs to be mixed better. I know I've had successful prints and then printed straight away afterwards and the next one has failed - my assumption for that failure is that the resin has settled in the VAT. next print, nothing else changes but I put the resin back in the bottle and shake it like crazy and the next print is perfect.

Wojtek Gierszal
2020-03-28 00:18:19

Thanks! But in my case I mixed the resin after the first one that failed, and printed this next.. plus this doesn't really explain why printer just stopped working on the same side and just didn't print a chunk of the miniature..

Wojtek Gierszal
2020-03-28 00:21:20

Also, do you think it might be a broken screen?
