After the Twin Rail Z Column upgrade...so far, everything has stuck to the build plate and layer lines are just not visible any more, nor pause-lines...well, short ones anyway, haven't tried a long pause. The Reindeer are one of today's jobs for my daughter. The coin is a British Pound, (not very big, not worth much.... ;-) But....I wonder if it can print the big plate job.....? Will find out tomorrow I guess.

IPA SAFETY. It seems that although you don't want to drink it or inhale too much of the vapour, rubbing your hands frequently in it is OK...(although not if it is contaminated by uncured printer resin). The W.H.O. have a document that gives the formulations of hospital-type handrub....one formulation is 93% IPA.
http://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf

Personally I prefer the IPA at my local....I don't know which s the safest... ;-)

Uprated, wobble-free Z Carriage built and working.

Very rigid to the casual waggle, but not 'clocked' with a given force to measure deflections yet. I also fitted an uprated, customised anti-backlash nut. This eliminates knocks and bonks, which were due entirely to leadscrew backlash (Z slide friction was just enough to hold up the carriage....sometimes....then it dropped onto the top flank of the thread and was lowered, rather than being pulled down by the screw).

No mods to the Photon. It is an easy swap.

Testing starting now.....on a long parallel-sided print that previously was ruined by layer lines. I'll let you know how it goes.....

PRECISION...how to adjust it. I printed a little mechanical part standing upright with the Dia 6mm end about 6mm off the plate, in anycubic green....just a prototype to see how it worked. I found that the 12.00mm dim was about 12.30mm and 6.00mm was about 6.26mm. I reason that the edge of the part on any given layer is actually the centre of the extreme cured region, so it must always come out a bit bigger....it is unavoidable without some adjustment to the model. SO......as I was most interested in the 6mm diameter, I made a copy of the Solidworks model that had it's surfaces all offset 0.120mm inwards. Here are the results.....(settings: 0.04, 8, 3, 70,10)

Phumex! It works really well! I have made a few prints using Anycubic green which is pretty smelly and used to need me to open a door and window to get a through draft. I had to tape over the bottom slots to maximise the effectiveness, but I would say barely noticeable now, even going outdoors, working in the garden and coming back in, I have to go within a couple of feet of it to detect a smell at all. I still need to add a switch and a means of splicing into the 12V supply internally. Anybody interested in buying one if I make a batch and put them on Ebay? I suppose it is worthwhile at about £65.

So what causes the 'Thunk' noise (and sometimes a noticeable jerk) as the build plate travels? It seems inconsistent....sometimes it does it, sometimes not, sometimes at a point when you might think the model is peeling from the FEP. sometimes on the way back down. So...Screw backlash?, Motor bearing preload springs returning the whole rotor and shaft to it's proper position, firmly against the opposite bearing...what is your theory?

Phumex! Built...looks good, not too noisy, (but logically that depends on the fan power as much as anything....wafty = quiet, blasty = loud). It isn't even visible, tucked behind, using the space taken behind to open the lid. BUT... the big question:....does it really work, does it absorb a significant amount of vapour, nearly all of it....or what? Is the suction sufficient that a makeshift polythene hood also over the front of the photon, covering the solvent washing area, also takes away the the fumes from IPA and absorbs those too...??? I'll let you know... ;-)

Phumex!...this should reduce the stink! It fits in place of the rear grill and uses a 12V 90mm fan I happened to have and a standard 210mm active carbon cooker-hood filter. I suppose the design can be easily adjusted to fit other fans....I noticed that most fans near that size are 92mm for some odd reason.

This seems a useful doodad to make a little in-line timer switch for a curing lightbox... https://www.ebay.co.uk/…/DKJ-Y-120-Minutes-15…/253966299494… It's only £2.53

It's hard to know which adhesion, layer misalignment, Z wobble, separation thumps, screw reversal clicks etc come from what source. The whole mechanical mechanism is a bit 'cut-price' and lets the otherwise nicely made machine down IMHO. I am thinking of an upgrade to replace the whole Z slide with twin square rails. No irreversible mods required, can use existing blue parts. The leadscrew has a lot of backlash too, I am thinking about a simple spring-loaded brass/bronze anti-backlash nut so that each layer is more likely to be precisely the right thickness. I looked at ballscrews but it seems in tiny sizes and pitches like this there is still some backlash, but I suppose very expensive fully ground ones might have some preload. I'll let you know how I get on, I have ordered the bits...(Nut, Slides, Al Plate etc). ANY COMMENTS on the Z Leveller idea? The screws would be tight in the base, spin the thumb-nuts up to touch the underside of the top plate and tighten nuts above....that's the plan.
