Ok Folks, so word of the Photon X is spreading and of course AnyCubic is asking for what we'd like to see in the latest version. I've seen many people here asking for larger build volumes (some at around 20cm cubed!) however I feel like this would be a pretty bad idea and here's why:

So DLP printers operate fundamentally different from FDM. Increasing build area isn't as simple as increasing the length of a few rods and cutting a larger PCB. the size of the screen must be made bigger, as does the resolution of the screen. Currently, the Photon uses a 1440p screen to give us the high res results we currently enjoy, but if you then stretched those pixels out to 20cm cubed, it would be incredibly low resolution and terrible print quality.

Now let's say we increase the resolution of the screen to match this large increase. goodness knows how high the resolution would have to be to maintain the consistent level of quality seen with current prints, which would cost goodness knows how much and would likely require their own screen manufacturing efforts (driving the price of our beloved 'cheap' DLP printer through the roof).

NOW what we could instead do, is focus on and improve upon what currently makes the Photon such a great printer. the level of quality of the prints that this machine pops out are outstanding for the price but can, of course, be improved. it's very possible that a higher resolution screen (with similar size) could be purchased 'off the shelf' by Anycubic, allowing them to introduce higher X/Y resolution with very little cost. If this were to be combined with an updated Z rail that prevents wobbling like the eagerly awaited mod on this forum, then I believe that Anycubic would be on winning track to win over the current fans as well as new hobbyists into our community.

Of course there are other features such as larger front screen size, better venting etc that are being discussed, however i just wanted to share my 2 cents on the subject.

thanks for reading!

TL;DR

DO focus on improving the quality of prints at an affordable price by using higher resolution screens 'off the shelf' as well as a better z rail. Z rail could be lengthened too to allow for taller prints.

DON'T focus on wider build volume. bigger screens will mean little to no jump up in X/Y resolution. Resin is expensive as it is, if you want BIG prints then use FDM or cut your parts up to save all the litres of expensive resin.

So just heard that anycubic plan to release a Photon X this year, and are asking for suggestions towards specifications. Please comment below with what specifications and features that you would like to see in this new model.

Note to Anycubic. I would love to review the model or be part of the whole build and release process, so please feel free to contact me.

I will try to filter out the best/most wanted suggestions and list them here as they arrive.

Specs wanted:

Build area: Minimum of (X,Y,Z) 215 x 135 x 200

This would be same as Tian T200 which is already available. 200mm in Y would be nice if possible as well as 300mm in Z. Not sure if it is possible as it may introduce further technical difficulties in designing. Suction would be an issue, however other manufacturers seem to have solved this via a drilled, perforated build plate.

FEP Vat: would be nice to have a much deeper vat like the Than, making filling and maintaining resin depth much easier.

Lighting: Stronger lighting. ParaLED array setup as an alternative "upgrade" option. See Phroezen Shuffle for further examples.

Screen: higher resolution screen for finer X/Y details.

Z rail: Better Z rail. Dual Z like Wanhao D8 and the previously mentioned To an

Ventilation: Upgraded ventilation for smelliness. Also needs to be as quiet as possible.

Connectivity: Wifi (NanoDLP) and also a USB slot to load files. I ask as my current printer uses NanoDLP and often fails on file sizes over 180mb.

Other features: Internal camera

Price: Under £1000 as Tian is around £800. Price could be minimised by keeping some of the more "luxury" features as an optional extra, allowing people to buy a base model and gradually upgrade it.

Hey all - trying out Chitubox 1.2 for the first time. First impressions are it is SOOOOOO much easier to use than Anycubic Photon Slicer. Love how it puts supports. That said, do I need to change any of the settings - other than exposure time, bottom layers/time, and resolution? I have never seen settings for the bottom light PMW, Light PMW, bottom lift distance, lifting distance, lift speed and retract speed. Should I leave those all at default values?

About to commit to buy a printer - can I get a recommendation for a high resolution (is that a thing?) resin to buy with it. I'd prefer opaque to buy with it. I'll probably be buying from AliExpress.

REALLY pleased with how this has come out!
did a couple of different orientations, and chose 2 copies each of 3 different designs to see what would work best, and out of all 6, 5 came out virtually error free!

I am overjoyed by this! Can't wait to print some more!!

First time printing with the Anycubic Grey Resin.

120s base layers (8)
14s normal (1s off)
printed at 0.03mm resolution.

Took around 8.5 hours and was around 1550 layers.

Is it normal? I cannot get work my printer. I re adjusted Z axis, changed memory USB Stick, I upgraded firmware and I leveled the build platform many times but as you can see I cannot get good definition at 0.05 microns do you have any idea? Could you help me? I checked all connected rooms but everything is fine, I changed FEP film. I began to make calibration because in the last prints I'm loosing resolution and after the print finish some reason get stick into the VAT. i don't think that the issue is the LCD. Thanks

Hello Photon owners. I'm wondering what your collective experiences are with the limits of resolution in the x-y plane using this printer? I'm currently printing a lot of things in ABS that have the general form of lots of vertically-oriented crosses regularly arranged in small containers. I have little benchies that roughly look like the attached picture--combinations of progressively thinner and progressively closer together crosses. In the final designs, the holding containers will be cubic, and the crosses will be the full height of each container. In practice, I'm getting about 1 mm thickness and ~0.5 mm proximity as the max resolution with our printer at work. What might I expect with a resin based printer like this? Thanks in advance for your advice. ? ?
