Can you recommend something better than CHITUBOX?

I mean, if anyone could, there’d be a whole lot less recommending Chitubox to begin with.
What issue are you having with it?

There is no best. Prusaslicer tends to be better at general support creation but has issues with very tiny islands. Chitubox I used for actual slicing. Use the validator to see what PS missed and fiddle around with support adding until I am island free
. Neither chitubox nor prusaslicer will cover all islands. But the one thing that prusaslicer had over chitubox for sure is a optimal orientation algorithm to minimize unsupported island/create the least amount of supports needed

Davy Struyf
so prusa for supports, then into validator for island checking and then into chitubox for final slicing

When I save the file to print in CHITUBOX, it shows me only format option (photons)
When I enter my USB to the printer, the file does not appear for printing

big ups to formware, the slicing is slow but the featureset is top tier

agreed. It can be considerably slower to slice. But the tool set is amazing.

That's because a .chitubox file is a project file that can only be opened in chitubos as a project. .photon files are what your printer reads in order to print..

what printer you use ? Photon or Photon S if S will Appear file in you Drive
Edward Hill

If you're using a Photon, not a Photon S, then you need to slice into Photon format. Look on the right hand side of Chitubox, you should see a button named "Settings". That'll bring up a dialog where you will see what printers you have available to u
se on the left hand side; if it just says default, or if it says Photon S, then use the "New printer" button (paper with a + on it) and add a regular photon profile. Select that, input settings, and re-slice.

I did it from the start (Photon S)
It only allows me to save it in a single format.
What can i do?

Also, double check to make sure your USB drive is formated in FAT32. I had that issue just today where I used it for something else and forgot to reformat back.
And if you are using the USB drive that came with the Photon, as it seems that you are since it has the stock printer folders listed, I'd recommend getting rid of that and using another one. The thumb drives that come with the printer are notoriously bad.

Another thing is if you have the photon workshop, you can drag the file and open it there, and basically resave is as .pws

Formware I might give a shot since it has a free trial. But lycheslicer doesnt so skipping that. Not ponying up almost 50 bucks hoping it works better than the free alternatives

Prusa slicer for supporting!

that's too much work honestly. no one should have to go through 3 programs to get a decent print.
someone needs to combine the best of the 3.
fusion 360 is adding its own slicer not sure if they will have a DLP support, BUT you can design your own custom support structures. so hopefully they add DLP if they dont support it already. the slicer is new so i dont know a lot about it yet.

misses a crap ton of island and refuses to put them down. hell I have had the dots on the model where it KNOWS about the island but still doesn't do anything. had to either edit the STL and add tiny pillars myself or fight chitubox.

yeah a bit of manual editing is needed, but it can be tuned pretty well. i only fucked up 1 print so far, and that was user error. Way better than placing them all manually, and also more reliable than chitubox.
Do you have any recommendation software wise?

none really. None are good enough. For example this model. You see those grey dots. Islands. Prusa slicer knows they are island. Refuses to place them. Even chitubox was being a pain to get it working.

try to readjust them a bit manually. i have these happenings too and i can make them work, and sometimes orientation of the model is the key, autoorientation gives a good clue but sometimes it doesn't care about if it places the support on the face or the back of the head.

i did. No matter it didnt create a support. And personally I prefer just printing minis straight. But eh auto orientation still ends up with stuff like this.
If I didnt do a photon validator run before 90% of these minis I would of had flat spots and failures

larger prints have way less issues but dnd minis man it misses alot. Run those STLs with the supports through validator you would be suprises how many mini islands happen and get auto fixed.

I print dnd sized minis also, without issue if i correct few supports manually and orienting it correctly. Idk bro, im glad it works for me even for the most tiny details. I will check this validator , but i had no issues at all so far.

the lizard dude on the right. You see how he has one foot up. No supports were generated by prusa slicer. His toes would of just been printing touching nothing for like 10-20 layers. Prusa slicer knew that his foot was essentially floating
but did nothing. The support markers were there. I even put some extra manually. Nothing. Chitu didnt want to work either so I had to go into 3D builder and put tiny rods underneath the toes. To make sure his foot printer properly.

weird! i gotta do it manually a few times, but i just need to click it and it applies the support. if it doesn't , than i need to readjust the angle of it, and than it works properly.
which version do you have ? maybe you have some older version or i really dont know!
:D
but im glad you found your workaround

Actually the model on the left. You see his left knee and how its flat and looks like its peeled. Yeah. That was one model i printed a version that I didnt fix yet. Its a giant island but neither prusa slicer or chitu put down supports

latest prusaslicer. Tried the latest RC. Same issue. You got a screenshot of your supports settings. Also if you want i can send you the stl and you can try and make it work.

Yes you just make the supports then export and use photon slicer. Same with chitubox you shouldn’t be using chitubox to slice models. Only support

i gladly would try it! i don't set nothing special up for the supports.
i use black anycubic resin , config from the resin spreadsheet.

Most frustrating part of prusa slicer. I wish you could also drag the pillars around and leave the contact point in place. I think there some weird min distance issues they need to get sorted.
