I got some model files the other day and they are huge. when I import into Meshmixer it crawls like molasses in freezing weather. Chitubox wont load it and Prusa slicer is really slow. Nettfabb wont allow it to upload because of the file size. I just want to hollow and add drain holes but Meshmixer does not like it and that's the only way I know how to reduce it.

Anyone have alternate suggestions? I know its not my computer, I opened multiple other files and no issues.

Following, because I have a file with similar issues.

Scott Pavlich
2020-03-21 09:01:18

How large is the file?

Quinn Mehling
2020-03-21 09:03:28

Scott Pavlich one of the files 427.5mb

Quinn Mehling
2020-03-21 09:05:27

All the files in this model are acting like this. Thought maybe something was wrong and tried sending to nettfabb. It won’t accept it because it’s over the 400mb.

Quinn Mehling
2020-03-21 09:30:41

I finally got Meshmixer to crawl through and reduce the file size.
427.5MB > 225.2MB

Hoping it doesn't affect the print resolution, guess I'll have to reduce all the files so it looks the same just in case.

Quinn Mehling While you’re computer might be fine, many times the weak link is with the graphics card. I’ve had to update all my cad computers over the years to handle ever increasing cad files. Any 3D model is math- intensive so that, RAM, and a fast processor make life a lot easier on large files

Quinn Mehling
2020-03-21 09:50:58

thought about that too, currently running 2, ATI HD5770 Mac editions

probably wouldn't hurt to up them. haven't had too many issues running Zbrushcore or Maya.

Tyron Craft

Did you solve the problem by reducing the file size? Having the same issue atm

Quinn Mehling
2020-03-21 19:59:33

Tyron Craft I believe so, I had to reduce it quite a bit. The render looks ok but I’m going to print it today on the photon and see how the quality is.

Some advice please
Trying to replace my screen and man it’s fiddly
I watched the anycubic vid a few times and thought I’d have a go

I feel like I’ve got the power attachment into the motherboard
It clicks in and sits flush but my uv test still suggests I’ve not done it right
Any Suggestions?

I'm currently in the same predicament. I replaced the LCD today and getting the same results. I then switched to another LCD from a different manufacturer but no change. I put in for a ticket with Anycubic. Let's see what they come up with.

Robert Mun
2020-03-21 11:07:24

What type of LCD screen? If it is the Mars one, I believe you have to use an adaptor. Plugging the wrong one in can fry the motherboard. In you case it looks like it may not be plugged in properly

Your wall thickness is set to more than two centimeters, try making it two millimeters and see if that helps. :)

I see you figured out the issue, but you may want to try meshmixer to hollow, it leaves way less artifacts inside. Once hollow load back into chitubox and out your holes in. Supposedly in chitubox, instead of hollowing you can leave it solid, then use the infill option and it'll hollowing and add a support pattern inside the model. Theres a video on chituboxes website showing how it works

I have successfully been printing great looking figures on my Photon. Now I am trying to print some parts for my Warship Models, I am having a hard time figuring out how to control these layer lines. They seem to be hit and miss as well, sometimes they are there on the same model with the same settings and others not. Is this the limitations of the printer or can I tweak the settings and help reduce? Sirya Tech Fast Grey with a 12s exposure .5 layer lines
Thanks in advance

Matt Enochs

Vinny Bryant Before or after clean up and post cure?

Vinny Bryant
2020-03-21 08:11:13

Matt Enochs try it after cure I got a bit Confused thought it was a filliment print but might still be worth a try

Robert Mun
2020-03-21 08:36:54

AA will help, and there is a chart that optimises angle to layer height. Eg 0.04 layer is about 42 degrees to the horizontal, but given you have multiple flat surfaces, you’ll have to compromise

Brklyn Brklyn
2020-03-21 11:26:45

It might be a loose z-axis or it might be that for that angle, you need thinner layers to appear smooth. I use .03 for everything.
Good blend of speed and detail

You can cove this u when you paint, just don’t use washes of the flat surface. And keep the paint matt

Bob Deblier
2020-03-21 15:17:01

Vinny Bryant nope - basically the only solvents that will dissolve cured resin are chloroform and paint stripper. Neither are a good idea to use at home. The former is illegal (in quite a few places) and the latter is carcinogenic.

William Riker
2020-03-21 16:38:58

Peopel have to understand that aliasing happens at every degree at some strength and antialiasing cannot always prevent it. The perfect angle is 45 degree, no matter what. Its a math Problem you could even calculate.

Vinny Bryant
2020-03-21 17:06:37

Just a thought is your bulit plate lever as the ones on the left look okay but the right look worse

How do you use CHITUBOX with a Photon printer? It does not look like it makes .pws files. My printer does not recognize .photon files, I have not tried .photons

翻譯年糕

Kyle Telechan
2020-03-21 07:55:00

I assume you got one of the Photons with the Photon S boards. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you have to do a firmware update before it recognizes .photon files.

Ralph Hulslander
2020-03-21 07:56:00

I did a update back in early December, possible there is a new one?

Kyle Telechan
2020-03-21 07:58:04

Ralph Hulslander I couldn't tell you, unfortunately. I've only had my printer since late December and it's a Photon S - all I know is from hearsay.

From what I can tell, the firmware for the "upgraded" photon came out in early November, so if that's t he one you're on, what I suggested might not be the solution to your problem.

All I know is that particular firmware enables .pws, .photon, and .photons files, so you may wanna check that version and what model printer you have.

Jeff Greenfield
2020-03-21 08:49:00

You need 5.02 firmware.

Ralph Hulslander
2020-03-22 00:35:17

How do I upgrade the Firmware? I found the 5.02 download there are 2 .bin files which do I use? Thanks

Stewart Webb
2020-03-22 01:50:06

Both of them, one is for the UI, and the other is the firmware

Stewart Webb
2020-03-22 01:50:29

Put the on the USB - then "print" both files using the Photon touchscreen interface

Richard Webb
2020-03-22 02:57:53

just read the PDF instruction sheet that is with the firmware

Ralph Hulslander
2020-03-22 04:03:43

there was no .pdf in the download, that was why I asked.

Sorry I tried searching the group so bear with me. Im on my 3rd attempt at printing the default cube that came on the flash drive. My FEP sheet sounds like a snare, i leveled it with paper, my build plate is pretty darn flat id say. And its pulling nothing up from the resin. I guess that means I need to up the initial layer exposure? Is it common for the default file on the drive to need adjustment? The printers going now so I cant check, do I need to reslice the file to up the exposure or can I adjust it on the machine? Thank you!

It’s made for the transparent green I believe. That’s got a fairly low exposure time. What resin are you using?

Aaron Dunkerly
2020-03-21 07:47:29

I picked up a bottle of black since my printer did not have any sample resin. That would probably be fairly different then?

John Chrapkowski
2020-03-21 07:49:39

Aaron Dunkerly yeah. Black needs more time in my experience. Probably because transparent allows more uv to penetrate a little better. Do you get the base on the build plate or is it all on the FEP

Aaron Dunkerly
2020-03-21 07:52:23

It gets on the build plate too. It gets submerged a tad when its printing. Bottle says I need to set the exposure to 60 seconds.

Robin MacNeil
2020-03-21 10:26:30

This sheet will help you a LOT in setting the proper exposure times: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j......

Try printing the factory default file before declaring dead, always worth a go https://github.com/....../firmware/factory-defaults.zip

Sen Kun

Dinesh Ghimire

Yes, it's a known issue. Just corrupted eeprom, easy fix. Reflash /update firmware or download the factory defaults gcode file and reflash eeprom.

Stephen Boulton
2020-03-21 23:48:13

They will ask you to update the firmware then try something else. Then send you a photon s motherboard and new fans.
That’s what they did for me a few weeks ago

Sen Kun
2020-03-22 00:04:02

Great. Maybe we should all do that, corrupt the eeprom then claim a new mainboard. Then fix the eeprom and have a free spare mainboard. Coolio, that'll teach them.

Jim Nelson

I've left stuff out for hours in the bright Southern California sun without incident. If it's overcast, all day isn't too long.

Check on it every 20 minutes or so

Chad Elstad
2020-03-21 22:58:14

If it's not strong sunlight, you might have to leave it outside for days
