From prototype to finished model reproducible and scalable!
Including the original model of the vehicle this represents 4 years of work. Lots of failures....lots of starts and stops. But any day now it will be ready for the boxes.
1/48th scale Boeing x20 Dyna-Soar in ABS resin printed on the Anycubic Photon Classic and S and the Elegoo Mars resin printer. Time to print complete model 98 hours on one printer without print failure.

I notice that the tackyness of the object goes away when its fully cured

Nathan Carter
2020-03-17 02:12:50

It’s cured enough when the surface is no longer sticky. Assuming you washed it well.

Over-curing may cause brittleness and discoloration.

Rukkians Kreations
2020-03-17 02:21:41

Yep when the tacky feeling is gone its cured

Chad Elstad
2020-03-17 02:22:43

when the model is no longer tacky to the touch, and if you lightly scratch your fingernail on the edge of the model if it doesn't make a scrape mark then it's cured enough. I also will let my model sit out for a couple days to off-gas because the resident on the inside of the model doesn't get as much of the UV light to cure

罗西晟
2020-03-17 02:25:53

My best solution is to estimate how long something will need and try to cure it for that long... anything between 30 seconds and .... (or less)

When the tackyness is gone I think it's ok.
Then there's the "can I play with it" test... by just picking it up and dropping it on the (hard) floor from table height...

I can drop the Anycubic test print uncured without it breaking, with the amount I cured it I dropped it and it was still fine.
First (and only) break line appeared in the base when I tried to bend it and see how far I could go

If you want to know it's positively cured 100% you can always blast it under your UV light for 24 hours.

My best solution is to submerse it in water and stick it in the Southern California sun for a couple hours.

If hollowing out your prints add multiple holes for washing. It allows more alcohol to get it and make sure there is no uncured resin left inside to leak or cause cracking.

Jen McVey
2020-03-17 04:22:25

Unfortunately for what I use my prints for hollowing isn't an option.

Guillermo Reyes
2020-03-17 04:24:49

Jen McVey oh gotcha, yeah I've learned to add multiple vent holes and then fill them back up with apoxie sculpt.

Micah Vestal
2020-03-17 08:11:45

My most used resins are clear and I post cure in hot water under a UV lamp for 30 min + (I put them in and then take them out whenever I remember/get around to it). They are about as cured as they can be.

I have a part printed in Siraya Blu that I ha ve left out in the sun on my patio for about 11 months, it has no discernible mechanical difference. So, for that particular resin I'm not sure there is a such thing as over cured.

Robert Maefs
2020-03-17 08:55:31

When you say 100% do you mean “fully cured for general use” or “100% cured as proven by laboratory testing”?

Hey folks, need some input. So I have been hoarding my used isopropyl alcohol, thinking I'd get rid of it when the disposal time came. If I seperate the gunk out, wouldn't the alcohol still function as a sanitizer? If so, and if I added aloe with to make diy hand sanitizer, would cured resin be harmful topically?

Allison Janssens
2020-03-17 01:36:33

Yeah I really wouldn't, you don't know if any chemical broke down and stayed in the alcohol solution.

Mike Michaels
2020-03-17 01:36:35

resin is very harmful topically. you can continue to use the ipa to clean prints, but for nothing else.

Pete Frith
2020-03-17 01:37:21

This may be a silly question, but what would happen to the resin dissolved the ipa if it was exposed to uv light?

Would the cured resin particles settle out?

Stuart Johnson
2020-03-17 01:42:40

Pete Frith i've done this with EA...which is what I'm using to clean my prints. What you end up with is a a squidgy gunk which you can filter. A paint filter probably wouldnt get it all, and a coffee filter would likely get blinded

Stuart Johnson
2020-03-17 01:43:15

But you can certainly use the ipa for cleaning.

Niall Forrester
2020-03-17 01:43:28

Or just use soap and water like a sensible person?

Chris Page
2020-03-17 01:46:16

Can you not get any more of the resin out and reuse it?

Jarin Udom
2020-03-17 01:46:44

Pete Frith This is a good way to reuse IPA for cleaning prints, but I 100% would not put it on my skin

Ryan Tudor
2020-03-17 01:51:26

Just to clarify, it would be a boon to the community if I had the means to make 2+ gallons of home made hand sanitizer. I personally don't need soap or isp at all. I just figured if my waste could help combat the global pandemic than it'd be a no brainer.

Chris Wilson
2020-03-17 01:17:52

The zero has a smaller build plate. I was thinking about getting the zero to save money. But I decided to go with the regular photon because of the bigger build plate. And it was only like $40 more.

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 01:29:19

Chris Wilson currently it's 70 more and that's US, ordering direct. With coupon code i can get the printer for 139 US vs 209. If i buy it from Amazon is 379 CAD. So all in all its about 100 more while it's on sale for 239 instead of 279.

Chris Wilson
2020-03-17 01:30:45

Chris Denyer I paid $220 for my photon on ebay. Vs the $180 I was seeing the zero. Just ordered mine a few days ago.

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 01:44:04

Maybe consider the Phrozen sonic mini? In my opinion it’s just all around better. Also if you use their resin we are talking 1 second layer print times. The screen last a lot longer too.

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:27:19

David Collinson it's nearly half the price and seems decent for the price.

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:27:52

Jolene Sweeney this is why I'm looking into resin ones now lol

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:28:43

Micheal Fuller I've heard of this one, still more money or about the same price as a photon on sale.

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-17 02:29:19

Chris Denyer yep! Do it! Also start looking for IPA now tho.. you need that to clean prints and with everything going on you can't get it. Acetone works but it's not ideal

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:30:08

Jolene Sweeney this is where the water washable stuff comes in. Hearing mixed results though about it.

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-17 02:31:12

Chris Denyer true I haven't tried it but next time I order resin I'll most likely get the water washable one. But a 1000ml of resin goes a long ways for 28mm minis.... lol

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 02:32:32

Chris Denyer still better then the zero tho. Zero is a waste of money in my opinion.

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:33:52

Micheal Fuller of course I'm sure it's better then the zero just like the photon is better then the zero but those two are the same pricepoint

David Anthony Vivas
2020-03-17 02:34:01

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:36:19

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-17 02:36:59

Chris Denyer I'll PM you idk if it still works

David Collinson
2020-03-17 02:37:41

Chris Denyer nah, only about £60-70 cheaper then the current Photon mate, to my eyes, it's not worth the downgrade. Get a Phrozen sonic mini for a couple quid more ?

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 02:38:16

Chris Denyer sometimes it’s better to save more money and get the more expensive options. That way you don’t kick yourself for not. You know?

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:43:32

Micheal Fuller yep i understand that lol this is one reason why i thought i would ask. It seems that people who don't have it don't like it but people who do have it think it's good.

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 02:48:16

Chris Denyer people that have the zero might only have the zero so they don’t know what better is.

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 02:53:47

Chris Denyer what i would really suggest is getting a photon and wash bundle. I have 2 photons and 3 wash systems and it’s game changing honestly.

Chris Denyer
2020-03-17 02:55:12

Micheal Fuller it says US only for wash system at moment.

Micheal Fuller
2020-03-17 02:55:26

Chris Denyer oh... that’s awkward. Lol

Jonathan Basseri
2020-03-17 02:59:29

I've been struggling to get successful prints from my Zero, but I'm new to resin printing so I can't tell if it's user error. Seeing this thread makes me think I chose the wrong model.

Bernardo Silva
2020-03-17 03:00:22

Mine is on the way, I'll share some results and look around for help in case I mess something up ?

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-17 03:00:47

Jonathan Basseri what issues are you having? I'm new as well but my printer worked straight out of the box no isses...

罗西晟
2020-03-17 03:02:48

As someone who recently moved from a FDM printer to a SLA printer too... I can confirm a few things:

1) Printbed alignment!
2) Base layer needs a different setting than higher layers.
3) Make sure base layer sticks.
4) Orientation matters.
5) Supports are there to make your print succeed.

Jonathan Basseri
2020-03-17 03:07:05

My base layer is good at sticking to the build plate. First test cube partially failed halfway through and the next one broke off halfway through.

My current plan is to point a space heater at the printer (it's out in the garage) and avoid auto supports entirely

罗西晟
2020-03-17 03:21:23

The Anycubic test cube should be printable without supports.
My resin printer is in my boilerroom with about a steady 18 Celcius.

From what I've been reading, Opaque resin needs a bit of longer exposure time compared to Translucent ones... (from the same brand)

Edit:
I was able to print the testcube with Anycubic Translucent Green with the "default" settings from Chitubox.
Though for my mini's I've bumped the base layer exposure because I had a fail with base-layer adhesion to buildplate.

Edit 2:
If you've leveled the bed, empty the VAT and flick it gently with your finger, the sound it makes should be about 300Hz - 325Hz (use a spectrometer app on your phone)

Nathan Fairclough
2020-03-17 03:29:20

And seeing how you are spending all your time prepping models to print, you don't have any more time to actually paint them. ? ? ?
