My settings for this, 1 how come it didn't print some and not others, 2 how can I save on resin. Should I use somethings different small raft thickness? It's at 2.7 mm. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You need thicker supports on the very bottom of the fails, then you can go thinner as you go up.

Pete Kastner

Supports failed, check the bottom of your vat.

Hi, because resin is getting more expensive I’m looking at my supports and was wondering if there is a way to decrease my thickness. I use Prusa supports and couldn’t find a setting there to decrease the thickness of them. Any suggestions?

It’s a lot of material to throw away.

You are flirting with failed prints. And that is the biggest waste of resin.

Christopher Hayes
2020-03-28 22:34:33

You can set the thickness of the supports, along with all their other settings, by going on the right side of the program, it will show "Pad,Supports" under the stl, and you can right click on that and choose the settings you want to modify. That said, the thinner your supports, the more likely they will let go due to suction from the prints for a failure.

Sean Smith
2020-03-28 22:59:36

Failures create more waste than successes do because you have to use twice as much resin.

Making supports thinner increases the liklihood of failed prints.

Just make sure you add enough support so you only have to print something once.

Unless of course it is something you are making multiples of I guess.

Scott Pavlich
2020-03-29 06:34:25

Get rid of the raft and keep your support bases to 1.5mm thickness

So, I just did my first print this morning and everything seemed to go very well, I printed the R_E_R_F.pws file and got 4 very nice results.

However, I cannot get my printer to see the Photon.stl file on the usb drive, I've even tried putting it on a separate drive and printing off of that.

Do I need to convert the .stl files to .pws files in order to print them? Is this a function of the slicing program that came with the printer?

Help me Anycubic Photon Owners, you're my only hope!!

New anycubic only see PWS files, you have to use thier slicer to make those, Chitubox only makes .photon
Or as long as it’s not a photon zero you can download the new firmware and it’ll read .photon again

Matt Larlham

My printer has version 3.4.1

Matt Larlham
2020-03-28 22:33:24

The Anycubic website has 4.2.19 or 5.0.2 for Upgraded Only. How do I determine which of these I should use?

Gary Slovinsky
2020-03-29 00:55:56

Check your main screen if it starts with a 4 then you need the 4.2.18, from github (someone can provide the link) if it don’t start with a 4 then you need the one starting with 5.

Matt Larlham
2020-03-29 01:01:53

My version is 4.2.19, so I need the 5.0.2? My machine is upgraded then?

Matt Larlham
2020-03-29 01:02:49

Sorry, I have the 3.4.1, not the 4.2.19

Gary Slovinsky
2020-03-29 01:09:53

Matt Larlham ok, then the 4.2,x don’t apply, I’d say you need the 5.0.2 firmware.

Still pretty new myself, but i'll take a crack at it. It's looking like you lifting and retraction speeds are a bit high. Also could be your orientation of the print to the plate that could be effecting it at those layers of the print.

Here's a pretty good link to explaining how orientation and lift speeds can effect prints. https://www.instructables.com/....../5-Settings-to......

Brian Rhodes
2020-03-29 00:04:53

Well I believe I solved the issue with some better places supports. This model has been a pain due to such high detail and the fact I want it on my desk to look at when I’m done

Brian Rhodes
2020-03-29 03:26:23

Ok so here is the update as we near the final quarter of printing today.......the issue was poor support placement to hold the edge of the feet evenly. I used the defective print as a starting point to fix the supports up. Pictures will be added once it’s done

A fun little project. Only the drink machine, bottles and bottle caps were 3D printed on my Photon. The base is scratch built from styrene stock, two-part epoxy putty and sand and gravel. The organ pipe cactus is from a Pegasus Models injection molded set.

Overexposure?

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:03:55

I believe it's at 11sec with anycubic green

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:04:40

I'll bump it down a bit then and try that

Mi Ha
2020-03-28 21:05:33

11 s is way too much. Even the default (8s for 0.05 layers) is quite a bit overexposed. I'm down do 3s at 0.03 layers for this resin to get good resolution. This looks more like a slicing error than overexposure to me though.

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:07:18

well ill give it a shot ? ? ?

Zena Andreou
2020-03-28 21:08:22

what's your layer height? photon or photon s?
could be a glitch in the slicer. Does the preview look normal?

Mi Ha
2020-03-28 21:08:23

If you're using 50 micron layers I'd go down to 8 and see what you end up with before going any lower. Check the sliced file for any errors as well.

Kyle Slade
2020-03-28 21:08:34

I'm printing them too!

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:13:35

Zena Andreou layer is .05 , yup looks perfect in slicer , I started to see it when I would do model with supports in chitubox then move it over to photon workshop, I'm printing on a photon zero, now I'm seeing in just photon slicer as well

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:15:20

Kyle Slade are you printing solid?

Scott Pavlich
2020-03-28 21:20:02

Probably too close together...possibly coupled with overexposure

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 21:23:38

I bumped it down to 8 sec , see what happens ?

Kyle Slade
2020-03-28 22:03:25

Kyle Slade
2020-03-28 22:03:47

Robin Stiller also I'm using 7 second exposure

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 22:38:31

K so it appears that the problem is in the slicer , I have sliced the file several different times, hollow, solid, and every time I view the image it has that solid support all the way up . Any suggestions on how to remedy this ?

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 22:39:58

In the preview this looks as it should, but once its sliced the image is different

Evan Rosario
2020-03-28 23:34:00

Error In the 3d file

Robin Stiller
2020-03-28 23:55:22

Evan Rosario I had another file from that group had a weird issue also , oh well , I put it through chitubox then sliced it with workshop, inspected the file , seems like I got a bingo now ?

Evan Rosario
2020-03-28 23:55:46

You can fix them in meshmixer

Liam Newman
2020-03-29 01:43:14

If your using chuitubox then it's a problem I've encountered before, once you placed the supports watch what's happens to it when you come put of support mode, the model sometimes drops towards the build plate fusing it with the supports, this usually happens to models with mesh issues, trying using something like 3d builder on windows 10, meshmixer or another stl repair program and try again

Hello everybody. I wanted to try this method and I did couple of test prints but nothing worked out.

https://www.chitubox.com/article_indepth_17839_1_30.html…

The convex piece have the right diameter but the hole of the concave piece it's smaller with 0,5mm or around that value. Or maybe both pieces are a bit more thicker. Am I doing something wrong? Should I desing the piece with more space for error? Or it's the printer/setings that thickens the pieces?

Thank you!

Mi Ha
2020-03-28 21:28:33

You will have problems achieving this kind of precision if you're not using dental resins, and even with those you'll have to take some light diffusion into account. Mine typically get around 0.1 mm wider with proper exposure.

You also don't want to print directly on the bed because first layers will be overexposed and you'll end up with a visible lip.

Palcu Alex
2020-03-28 21:31:27

So I should adjust the dimensions to make room for error.

Mi Ha
2020-03-28 21:40:12

Palcu Alex You will inevitably have to. You can play with your exposure settings to get as close as you can but you'll never be able get it perfect. That is even before you consider some shrinkage from curing into account.

Palcu Alex
2020-03-28 21:47:50

Ok. Thank you for help!

Palcu Alex
2020-03-29 20:47:36

I made another test and those are the results:
-a 5mm hole can fit a 4,5 mm cylinder tightly, like it's glued
-a 5mm hole can fit a 4,4mm cylinder with a light grip when i turn them
-a 5mm hole can fit a 4,3mm cylinder beeing just right, not tight, not lose
A 4,6 cylinder won't fit and from 4,2 down, it's starts moving inside.
I used 17s normal exposure time.

Palcu Alex
2020-03-29 20:47:50

Mi Ha
2020-03-29 21:07:04

Sounds about right. If you measure the 5mm hole and 4.5mm cylinder with a vernier you'd probably get 4.75 for each, meaning a .125 mm error on each side. That's about what I'm getting as well. If you're going to print significantly different sizes to that you'd probably have to test for resin shrinkage too.

Palcu Alex
2020-03-29 21:09:20

I don't have the right tools to measure that precise but I figured this should work. ?

Mi Ha
2020-03-29 21:10:18

Palcu Alex If you're going to be printing precision stuff I'd recommend investing into a solid digital vernier, you can get pretty good stuff for about $30.

Palcu Alex
2020-03-29 21:16:50

I tried to print this but they didn't fit. Otherwise I don't bother that much for precision. It has enough precision for my taste.
