How to make PLA parts watertight

Watertight means the part will hold water without leaking. Photo 1 shows 5 parts I've made that originally leaked water badly. (PS: I also made the bowls in the background before I got started with 3D printing.) The reason for the leakage is that 3D printers leave tiny gaps in between the loops of plastic they lay down, and water can get through these gaps. The solution to this problem is to seal the gaps. But how to do this?

With ABS most people use acetone. It is a solvent for ABS and a light coating is enough to literally weld the adjacent loops of plastic together. But acetone does not work with PLA.

There is a chemical that does work as a solvent for PLA; it is called tetrahydroflouane (THF). This is a rather nasty chemical that can cause serious injury and must be used very carefully. Fortunately I found another one that seems to work just as well - dichloromethane (DCM).

Photo 2 is a small can of this I got at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00466V8F0…

It comes in various sizes; I got the smallest one to test with. DCM is not a very nice chemical either, but it is not as bad as THF. It looks like water but is highly volatile - even more so than acetone. I suggest using it only outside or with a fan blowing on and away from you. I used the small brush in the photo to simply paint the DCM onto the part. It dries almost instantly. So I put on roughly 2 - 3 coats which actually takes almost no time at all.

I'd be interested to hear is anyone else uses this to make their parts watertight.

This might also work. It dfinitely smooths out prints and fills in gaps. It's also more expensive, but may be more chemically safe

Ooops!

Photo 1 shows what happened with my latest print. Sooner or later everyone gets a result like this - it's what happens when the print becomes detached from the print bed and the hotend moves it around while continuing to extrude plastic. My best guess is this happened because I left the printer to print overnight, and the weather here has been colder than usual. This means the hot plastic was subject to more cooling contraction than normal, with the result shown in Photo 2 - it is easy to see how a large area of the print has contracted and pulled itself off the print bed.

This is PLA which in general is not supposed to require a heated bed. But I'm thinking a bed of around 18 - 20C might be a good idea.

It's supposed to warm up some today, so hopefully I'll be able to re-do this print soon.

Did you use glue to fixate the first layer?

Birk Binnard
2016-03-09 01:54:07

No - I use a Zebra Plate and these do not usually require glue. In hte past I've had some situations where the finished part was quite difficult to get off teh Zebra Plate, so I have not tried glue on it yet.

Well, I got the same results with glue on the ZP. So it's back to blue tape on the standard glass bed.

Is your zebra plate upside down? Shouldn't the black part face upwards?

Birk Binnard
2016-03-09 12:35:34

No.

I talked to the guy who's company sells the ZP. He said both sides are the same material - some sort of fiberglass that's been soaked with a "secret" solution. Since the plate has 2 sides he simply opted for 2 different colors. I switch back & forth depending on filament color I'm printing.

With all my filament reviews, I though I'd develop a grading system that you can use at home without special testing equipment. I'll be grading 3Dom USA buzzed filament, as well as playing with Proto-pasta mag Iron PLA soon.

What is going on with this GCode?

Recently my printer started misbehaving at the start of a print. Right after finishing heating the printer would "jump" and get itself vertically misaligned. After that it would not start the print properly. To fix the problem I have commented out one line of GCode: here is the beginning of the GCode I've been testing with:

; GCode generated by CraftWare

G28 ;Home

M109 S200 ;set and wait head temperature
; ------------------------------------
; Layer #0
; ------------------------------------
G21 ; mm
G90 ; abs
G92 E0 ; reset extr
M106 S0
;G0 F9000 E-3.0000 <===== What is this for and why does it make my printer jump?
G0 Z0.200 F3300
G0 X-7.109 Y4.539 F6000
G0 F9000 E0.0000

The above GCode works fine. If I remove the ; from the indicated line the printer tries to make a move that it cannot (it does make a pretty nasty sounding noise when it does this) and then proceeds to start printing. But the vertical alignment is off and the print doesn't actually come out properly.

Perhaps this is a bug in the Craftware slicer; at any rate I have posted this message on the Craftware message board.
