First print a success. Wildly underestimated the size these would turn out, but I guess now I’ve got some teeny tiny dice blanks. Anyone got any tips for get accurate sizes in STLs and the slicer? These came from blender because I’m going to do some procedural modelling in future iterations. They were all accurate dimensions in blender but turned out even tinier than this (like smaller than a cm for the whole thing) when I imported the STL into Chitubox.

I’m guessing the issue is a Blender metre not actually being a metre. If anyone has any experience there let me know!

SO... after a year, I've finally taken my Photon out of the shipping box to start experimenting with it (I've been FDM printing and resin always seems to be daunting to me) I think I'm ready for my first print... I've looked at the guides... installed Chitubox... Leveled my bed using the Flint Read method... Set my settings for Anycubic green based on the charts in the software ( I have MonoPrice gray but I'm going to start with the green because I hear translucent is easier to work with)... and I have a couple of questions...

Should I just throw out/erase and repurpose the included USB stick or is there something important on it I should keep?

How accurate is the newest resin exposure chart?

Thanks!!

Following on from my Twin Rail Z Slide Upgrade for the Photon, I have been busy making one for the Elegoo Mars. Like the Photon version, it makes the Z Axis very rigid, so eliminates Z wobble and enables accurate repeatable printing, even if the model is not central on the build plate or has small 'suction cups' (open volumes with no air vent at the top). I made a video showing more about it... https://youtu.be/1uB8rY_H-Zg 翻譯年糕

I've just discovered that ChiTu Box can read GCODE and preview it. We could do all sorts of crazy infills using classic slicers (Cura, Slic3r, Simplify3D, etc.) with settings adjusted in a way that ChiTu box will produce reasonable outputs... I'll play with it more and post results.

Hi everyone. Thanks for letting me join the group. Scrolling down the page there is some truly phenomenal work going on here. I've not owned the photon long but I've been pleasantly surprised at the print quality however on recent prints they seem to be reduced in size from my original design quite significantly and I can't work out how to get accurate dimensional representation in my components:(

Hello Photonsters. After reading a lot of very helpful informations and doing tons of failure prints I want also share some of my noob experience with the Photon.
I own the Photon for about a week now and am more than satisfied with the print outcomes.
Here I used a mix of Monocure Flex 100 + Monocure Rapid Resin clean about 20/80 (shame on my lazyness not to measure it accurately... ?‍♂️ ).
I got a pretty nice outcome, but as you can see, on the dice there were also some uneven edges.
If you could give an advice to improve it, would be much appreciate.
Happy printing!

So if I want dimensionally accurate printed parts what do I need to do? I have the original Photon with AA support.

Sorry, I know there's been some threads that discussed software solutions. But I feel like they were based on some existing knowledge (or prior discussions). What do I need to use to make dimensions not oversized and to fix the undersizing of holes? Is there settings in ChiTuBox I can use? or is there other software I would need to buy?

Dan Andersson
2019-11-01 19:18:38

If you print someone elses model, thats not showing your skills. With resin printing it is quite easy to get a good print.

Use the anycubic test cube. It is free and is a good example 8f what the printer can do.

Joey Rexer
2019-11-01 19:19:36

I think benchy for fdm. resin does not have a comparable print.

Csaba Szilágyi
2019-11-01 19:21:05

I consider setting up the printer properly as a skill. I think it does not matter if you print someone elses model if the result is a blob of resin.

Minghua Kao
2019-11-01 19:26:41

Not for showing off but for testing; since I usually do small stuff like miniatures and jewelry I'm using these for resin and setting tests:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3495269
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3473793
This one may get added in the future for straight line testing:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3470476

High level of detail, surfaces in multiple angles and a number of points of failure if not correctly supported, small so printing time is not too high. And lovely figures in themselves.

Csaba Szilágyi
2019-11-01 19:48:38

I am thinking more like an object like this to see the accuracy and stuff:

Sen Kun

There's no showing off skills printing an *.stl. More like showing off the resin and how well your printer is dialed in.

Maybe yeah, show off exposure savvy, orientation and support skills. But if your resin is mediocre or your printer is off specs, you'd still get a dud print.

Sen Kun

This is a good one. And ameralabs did a good write up that'll help you understand resin printing better to go with it.

Well that's what I meant. Only technical side, what can you achieve.

Israel Perez
2019-11-01 19:52:22

Literally this is what benchy is for.. and there are so many measurements to confirm accuracy. Its not just a boat its a torture test and benchmark hence the name benchy. Just as useful for resin but there are test for resin that also test resolution

By the way, if you want a challenge, try this one: https://grabcad.com/library/ring_a-1 It's hard making this one without the spaces between plates filling up. I've to put a bit more time in to see if this can be done.

Lance Fulfer

Csaba Szilágyi I had a perfect print literally an hour after pulling my printer out of the box... so no, there isn’t any skill involved in setting up the printer. It’s ridiculously easy compared to say an fdm printer

Stephen Carr

Csaba Szilágyi being adequate is not a skill, and does not deserve an award.

Csaba Szilágyi of course there is. But let’s not confuse “not screwing it up” with an actual skill....

Csaba Szilágyi
2019-11-01 20:54:53

Alright. Then what is the case when the print did not fail, but it's deformed because of lack of support or wrong exposure times, etc. ?
Is it not a skill what you develop by gaining experience?
Maybe I am using the wrong word, but then how should I call it then? :)

Dan Andersson
2019-11-01 21:01:02

I would call it experience and learning from your mistakes. Shure it is a skill to be able to get a perfect print out every time. But the fact is that everybody can do it if they want to learn. And everybody can do it even faster if they allow a couple of failed prints. And many people can get a perfect print by mistake.

The hard part of 3D printing is creating the model. It takes a lot of time to learn cad or sculpt software. You also need imagination and an eye for the outcome you want.

Printing someone elses model is like driving your car to a garage and let someone else do the job. Then you can tell your friends "I fixed my car today" because you drove it to the shop and payed. The hardcore version is that you find out what is wrong, acquire the parts and tools and fix your car with your own hands.

Jon Quirós
2019-11-01 21:22:06

Dan Andersson Mmm, not entirely- for someone who already knows CAD the difficult part is zoning in on settings, proper supports, etc... You know, actually “printing.” But you’re right b/c those are things a printer is meant to do! Really though, we’d have to define what the term “skills” means. Do we mean “get a clean print,” “from idea to reality” or something else ?

Csaba Szilágyi
2019-11-01 21:27:22

Dan Andersson "Diving skills" You know. Cmon. Do we really have dissect this? :D
Explaining that you have to get to the garage somewhow with your car? You can end up in the ditch, etc.
At least someone get it what I am talking about. :)

Ric Watts

Elitist claptrap - if you are not a 3D modeler then you have no skill. Two different things entirely. One is creative and one is technical. I know people who do design work who have never owned a printer or would know how to use one.

Again that’s just elitist look at me ego.
