It's complete and ready to kill some half-breed demons. This build has a core/spine of FDM prints and then all of the outer detail parts are resin prints bonded to it. It was definitely a learning process for using the resin printer for this but its now an almost 100% replica of the actual Constantine Holy Shotgun. This was a build I initially put off as the detail was just not possible on an FDM printer without a huge amount of post printing work to get it smooth so it was the main reason to get a resin printer. Not a normal build and it had a few bumps but I'm still happy with it as there's just detail from every angle.
FDM prints done on a CraftUnique Craftbot 2 Using 3D Filaprint Iron grey PLA and the resin prints done on a Anycubic Photon using their own Black resin.

Daniel Lilygreen Its the print file not sure I never had time to print one. It’s on an old HD’s somewhere. He said was modeled In solid works or some shit. And they had him
3D print it. Dudes like 10 years older than me. So when I worked on Constantine he reached out. I wanna say. He does the 3D printing now for Batnthesun. And we’re working on some red hood pilot now.

Good day!

I want to share my first work using 3D printing. And this is also my first experience with 3D sculpting. I started work with mastering # Mudbox and really loved this program. I hope it will replenish and develop, because, Despite the lack of many useful features from Zbrush, Mudbox is very convenient and has an absolutely intuitive and comfortable interface.

For printing, I used Model Clear resin and Model Cherry from # HARZLabs ,

Model Clear used for the eyes, water droplets on the wings and an imitation of a cloud, followed by tinting in alcohol with a caller from washing with Model Cherry. The result is quite an interesting result.

The wings were printed on another printer, FDM format. As a result, I am convinced that for most of my tasks, I need very high detail, which is available only to DLP, LCD printers so far.

Vincent Chan

Are you putting them on the lathe and putting a finish on them? That would put a barrier between the skin. A lot of exotic African & South American woods that I've made pens from irritate skin as well.

Jeffrey Opel
2020-03-27 08:50:03

No lathe. The pen bodies would be purely 3D printed. Thanks for the note though

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 08:51:37

Resin out preforms FDM in all categories except price.

Jeffrey Opel
2020-03-27 08:56:15

Certain items can be printed faster by FDM machines if layer thickness is not critical.

Micah Vestal
2020-03-27 09:20:44

Both technologies have strengths and weaknesses. I use both all the time. FDM is generally much better for bigger stuff than resin. Case in point, you can use FDM to print something as big as a car. I can't imagine that being realistic with resin, even if resin was free and you could get it in 50 gallon drums, lol

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 10:51:43

Jeffrey Opel LIKE LAST TIME.... this is a false statement. It is mechanically impossible.
Have you ever been a used car salesmen?

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 10:53:36

Micah Vestal like I said it’s not cheaper. But it’s 10x faster, stronger and detail isn’t even comparable.

They make huge resin printers. I saw one make a boat haul. That said the machine was $20M.

Not cheaper, but better.

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 10:54:17

Trying to teach old men new tricks... impossible.

Jeffrey Opel
2020-03-27 11:04:44

Jordan Baldrige I’m so sick of you calling me names

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 11:12:26

Jeffrey Opel I’m not calling you names. What name did I say?

Jeffrey Opel
2020-03-27 11:26:10

Jordan Baldrige You flat out called me a liar the last time. A Used Car salesman and old man this time. Why do you think you can get away with this?

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 11:27:16

Jeffrey Opel last time sure. This time no. I’m old too, so that doesn’t count, plus it was a joke. The other thing was a question.

Lighten up a little. The world is not out to get you.

Jeffrey Opel
2020-03-27 11:28:13

I dont know why you think you can get away with it

Jordan Baldrige
2020-03-27 11:29:12

Jeffrey Opel with what? 1 old man calling another old man old?
Is that what your bent up about?

Micah Vestal
2020-03-27 12:02:44

Jordan Baldrige I have seen a BAAM in person. I have never heard of a resin printer that big. It doesn't seem worthwhile to make a resin printer that big. My point is that it's not better at that scale, regardless of price. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should, lol.

Vincent Balmont
2020-03-27 13:56:21

Jeffrey Opel resin prints way faster, if your printing minis u can print 10 vs 1 on fdm, if you are printing buildings, resin is still faster as it does the whole layer at the same time. I started with resin and just got an fdm for terrain stuff, resin is so much better

Niall Forrester
2020-03-27 14:47:12

Personal use, or selling? If the latter, you might want to be a bit more cautious, 'just in case'.

John Vickers
2020-03-27 16:08:42

Ask oneself is it safe to put in your mouth like say Dental applications or surgical apperatus & you may find the answer.

Gary Noble
2020-03-27 19:49:27

One small advantage of FDM over standard resin I've observed is distortion - FDM doesn't warp as readily as resin does while curing so if you need a high degree of accuracy of overall shape FDM may be best.

Saying that I expect there are resins out there that are designed to overcome this issue.

Still, not going back to FDM - resin is amazing.

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-27 20:51:54

Huge disagree and I've used both for many many years and worked in the sla field

Logan Lees
2020-03-27 22:59:05

There are plenty of resins you could use if you're really concerned about it. This is just an example, but pro black 10 resin from figure 4 is Biocompatible capable per ISO10993-5 and ISO10993-10, which means this:

ISO 10993-10:2013 Biological evaluat ion of medical devices Part 10: Tests for irritation and skin sensitization

ISO 10993-5:2009 Biological evaluation of medical devices Part 5: Tests for in vitro cytotoxicity.

You wouldn't really need to go to these lengths though as people have said prior to this comment, fully cured resin should not irritate the skin. But this kind of resin would be safe if you're one of those people who bites things haha.

Chris Svo it does after prolonged exposure. I printed a hollow 16mm ear tunnel last year, after three days it caused blistering and swelling inside my ear and I had to cut the earring out.

I also made a fidget ring for someone who experienced similar on their finger after a few days.

Have just done my first print on the Photon after the obligatory sample file thats included.
Sliced on Chitubox. Apart from the support marks, and the fact that I broke part of the sword when taking the supports off, I dont think it is too bad for a first print is it?

some questions

Not including the cleaning curing process. would you consider the leveling and pre-printing process on a resin printer to be more or less finicky and tweeky like a fdm printer?

How would you consider the noise it makes during print. Can you hear it in the other room? Louder or quieter then an unmodded ender 3?

I am guessing anycubic resin works best on the photon s? Do certain colors print better then others?

Is it possible to print a thin tile like in this photo on a resin printer? Or would its weight most likely dislodge it during print?

John Chrapkowski of the dozens are certain brands better, certain colors more cooperative? Do some cure better then others?

tilt the model to:
Reduce surface area of each print layer

for the resin brands, I’ve not had too many bad experiences except I am not a fan of the water washable

John Chrapkowski so doing a 12cmx12cm tile like I showed in the image would not work?

Andrew Cameron it’s very thin so I would print it like that. Many will say tilt it but for such a small cross section you’ll be fine. If you’re doing many, I would move them around for each print to reduce wear on the FEP ( clear plastic on the bottom of vat) in a specific spot

John Chrapkowski not sure what the fep is. you mean the fep film? How long does the average fep last?

John Chrapkowski

fep is the clear plastic that the layer is cured on, if all goes well it’s pulled off and sticks to the rest of the model. Durability is variable but I’ve found it to be pretty good. Around 30-50 prints. Cost is a couple dollars to replace

as for colors, transparent generally are shorter cure times and therefore ‘easier’ I suppose maroon seems to be really difficult for some reason

John Chrapkowski where are you finding these for a couple dollars I am seeing around 15 - 35 a sheet on amazon

John Chrapkowski

First page on amazon. So these are 4 or 5 packs. I get two per sheet so a 5 pack is 10 replacements. You can buy in bulk for more savings

What you're basically printing is something the Photons have been proven good a heap of times. It's a Lithopane. Hit the search box for the group with that key-word and you'll see what I mean.

r.e. resins, i.m.o. there are MUCH better resins than anyc ubic out there. I swear by Monocure Rapid 3d, but Sriraya (spelling?) also have a great rep. Treat resins just like you treat filaments. Sure you can probably buy the stuff with your printer's brand on the label, but it doesn't necesarily work any better with your printer than other stuff.

no this is just a terrain stl tile, not based on a photo not wanting to do lithopanes. Is the way I would have it angled on the bed an issue?

Andrew Cameron not on my experience. I keep having my large bases fail. I've tried flat, upright, 20d degree off axis and 45 degree.

William Tatum you talking about printing something like the picture?

William Tatum
2020-03-22 00:02:45

Andrew Cameron yes. Largish, thinnish, flat structures for me warp, deform, or fail depending on plate orientation. Meanwhile my regular models, even large, but thick bits, do just fine.

It's the one area where I've had consistent failures.

crap. Back to the drawing board on the printer to buy. Wonder how people are getting thin lithopane prints without it warping then

Quite pleased with this one. My photon is a great little machine. But, I did notice some FDM like z-banding(?) near the lower socket. It's not as visible on the opposite side. Any insight as to what may have caused it? Aside from that and likely some amateur placed supports, it turned out fantastic.

Did you hollow the model?

Derek Fontes

I did not, I haven't tried to hollow a model yet.

Derek Fontes there’s your answer probably. Printing solid models will occasionally result in lines or shifts in your print

Is this something we can do on our resin printers? I know it says FDM/FFF, but is our printer's build volume too small to do the same thing? https://www.3dprintingmedia.network/copper3d-organizing-global-campaign-to-3d-print-antimicrobial-masks-on-a-global-scale/?fbclid=IwAR38v0iDsZR302aOoJy98iDj3FOvY1gOEBECuOSfODljW_HM6iVvMU2KWSQ 翻譯年糕
