The last two prints I have run ended with a weird "ripple" in the FEP that wasnt there at the start of the print. Any Ideas what is causing that?

What’s the best paint to use. The kind I use takes several layers before it looks good

Are you priming and base coating?

Gerrett Humbarger
2020-03-31 05:04:17

Andrew Sternglass yeh been using a primer spray paint of white then try to paint still doesn’t look good lol

Michael Maxwell
2020-03-31 05:14:21

What are you using now and are you hand painting or Airbrushing?

Jim Nelson
2020-03-31 05:41:22

I use Vallejo Hobby Paint in a rattle can to prime, then use Vallejo Model Air to airbrush, and finish off (once decals are applied) with Testors Dullcote from a rattle can or Aztek clear matte from an a/b. If I need to apply with a brush, I use anything from Vallejo, Reaper, AK Interactive, or even craft paints.

David Deason
2020-03-31 06:13:06

White primer will be hard to cover without a few layers. Use grey or a colour that will suit the majority of the models final colour.

I use Vallejo paints for what I do.

John Taber
2020-03-31 06:23:46

I’ve been using a generic white primer - I think it’s Rustoleum? And Reaper paints to cover. (Which is what I use for my traditional minis.). Seems to cover pretty well with just one coat.

raise the exposure up by half a second and try again. looks like the supports just about failed at the contact points. that or make the contact points massive but then more work cleaning up afterwards

We followed some people's advice from my last post and and are having an easier time with Blender. However, we still can't seem to get all the dice numbers to work, specifically the number 4 and occassionally the number 9. We've tried using different fonts and I've even manually modeled a 4. Everytime we go to use a Boolean modifier to add it to the dice body there is an error. First, the sides of the number were missing. I removed double vertices and it was better but still portions were cut out/missing. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem?

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 04:34:55

Hmm, to be honest, yes i have... When i run into a such roadblock with blender, i just begin again from nothing. Many times the issue with boolean is something that you dont see or have missed somewhere and to find it takes more time than remodeling th e whole thing. Look for doubles in vertices, two points in the same location, also check the normals, in edit mode press A key, then select mesh from the tool bar, normals and recalculate outside, if the surface is not pointing out, the boolean doesnt work correctly. Again mesh and then clean up from where merge by distance, to get rid off double vertices.

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 04:36:50

Hope that helps...

Jeff Lee
2020-03-31 04:38:51

If you're using a modifier to do the boolean operation, make sure scale and rotation is applied to both objects (that's the Blender equivalent of "have you tried turning it off and back on again?" because it solves so many problems)

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 04:39:07

Jared Rushton
2020-03-31 04:40:11

Thats the tutorial we started with. All the other numbers and the custom 1 and 20 work fine.

Jeff Lee
2020-03-31 04:42:25

Also, when a boolean doesn't look the way you expect it to (whether using the modifier or within edit mode), try setting the overlap/merge threshold value to zero.

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 04:50:53

Keep at it, i hope you get it worked out.

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 05:03:15

Also, might try to model the number four to the face on the dice body, that way you can be sure to have the shape in the object without using boolean... Hard to give more indepth advice here.

Pekka Haarala
2020-03-31 05:03:47

There are multiple ways to skin that cat... Lol

Pekka Haarala
2020-04-01 01:24:08

There ya go...

Pekka Haarala
2020-04-01 01:26:31

when you convert the text to a mesh, and extrude it, do make sure the normals are okay... Edit mode, Mesh > Normals > Recalculate outside. do the same for the dice body after boolean...

This is my particular go-to as well. I don't keep a meticulous ratio, but I think I'm about 70/15/15 of grey:tenacious:blu. Extra small supports sometimes break away prematurely but I haven't had any major failures.

Alexander Bayerdorffer
2020-03-31 21:53:39

Yeah about the same ratio just kinda eyeball it

Andrew Rosenthal
2020-03-31 21:54:42

I have good success with anycubic grey, Siraya tenacious and Siraya Blu. I don't keep a meticulous ratio, but I think I'm about 70/15/15 of grey:tenacious:blu blended together. Extra small supports sometimes break away prematurely but I haven't had any major failures.

I've found the cheap/fast/simple style resins are very brittle so the tenacious makes them less risky to handle.

As Katy Perry once said....I tried it and I liked it (resin printing)....so I want a bigger build plate than my zero (which I'm keeping as it's been awesome), but my zero is also completely odour free so I can use in the house with no issues at all. Is the Photon or Photon S as efficient at keeping the smells at bay?

Completely odor free? Go see a doctor about that anosmia ;)

Oleksandr Panforov

Photon S - no. Upgrades help reduce odor, yet it'd be present

Oleksandr Panforov
2020-03-31 03:36:25

Bob Deblier how's that? Mine Zero is also odorless during operation.
Until I open the lid, obviously

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 03:37:26

It was a big worry for me as my other half and my kids use the room frequently, but there is seriously no smell , or I would get it in the ear!

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 03:38:00

Oleksandr Panforov thank you....do you think its becasue of the cabinet style lid?

Bob Deblier
2020-03-31 03:39:08

Lee Rogers trust me, there is. Maybe your nose doesn't pick it up. Seems to be common in this group. I don't have a super sensitive nose, but I cannot enter the room I'm printing in without an active carbon face mask.

Ernest Sandridge Ill
2020-03-31 03:40:11

I have a zero, it's faint but there is a smell. And yeah, it's still there though.

Oleksandr Panforov
2020-03-31 03:41:06

Lee Rogers I assume it's due to questionable fumes extraction design.
I believe it was supposed to be filtered via charcoal filters. That was not very effective.

Cabinet style lid compliments to that.

I'm also printing in my living room, and the best I've done to reduce smell - bought Anycubic Eco resin.

3m filter I've installed also helps.

Oleksandr Panforov
2020-03-31 03:42:24

Lee Rogers like so. My very special printing corner

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 03:49:17

Bob Deblier I have this in the dining room . No odour until lid is off. This is a photon zero.

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 03:50:04

Oleksandr Panforov fab thank you

Dan Andersson
2020-03-31 04:20:42

Original Photon - absolutely not! It throws all the fumes out from the print area with a loud fan. With modifications it gets quite unstinky.

You can install a carbon filter inside the printing area and circulate the air through it to reduce smell even more.

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 04:22:11

Dan Andersson thank you . Do you mean printed parts to direct the fan?

Jolene Sweeney
2020-03-31 04:26:07

SAME lol I love my zero and want another one lol I keep mine in the garage so smell isn't an issue. From what research I've done it's more about the resin brand then the printer :) I use elegoo gray with little to no smell

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 04:31:02

Jolene Sweeney I've tried a few bramds, and even without the lid on the water washable resins are really low odour! I like the e-sun ones.

Dan Andersson
2020-03-31 04:41:31

Here is the filter holder I made: https://cults3d.com/....../anycubic-photon-active-coal......

It uses the original fan. It circulates the air inside the printing area through the carbon filter.

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 04:45:13

Dan Andersson perfect thank you. I can get the photon off Ali Express for £188 delivered, but I was concerned about the smell. I take it you can buy these carbon filters from Amazon ?

Dan Andersson
2020-03-31 04:49:51

Lee Rogers Most likely yes. I used activated carbon pellets which I bought from a local allergy store. Pellets can be usually also found in aquarium shops.
With my FDM printer I had a holder for activated carbon mat. It was designed to be used in the oven filter in the kitchen. Worked also well.

Kevin Boogaard
2020-03-31 04:50:56

I don’t notice any printers smell myself. Neither does anyone in the family actually. Only when I open them I have 9 different resin printers for reference. I think it depends on how sensitive you are I guess

Lee Rogers
2020-03-31 04:55:23

Kevin Boogaard I understand that, but that wasnt the query. I still use mask, but I dont want an odour filling the room as I dont have an outside area I can use.

So, the verdict is in, STAY AWAY from Monoprice Gray Resin. I have had nothing but failures with it. I've printed with Sain Smart, Elegoo, and AnyCubic with no problems. Every model I've tried to print with Monoprice Gray has failed. I've fiddled with my exposure settings, 70-90 sec base layers,5-10 base layers, 10-14 seconds per regular layer and even small bases just warp right off the plate. It's definitely adhearing to the base plate on the first few layers, but not well.

I bought 3 bottles, returned 2, sucks to eat a liter, but hopefully I'll save y'all some heart ache.

2020-03-31 03:22:12

I had the same thing with a liter of Anycubic Green. The 500ml that came with the printer was amazing. I bought a liter and no matter what I did it failed 80% of the time. That being said I imagine that this is cheap resin with little to no quality control so one bottle may be pure shit and the other perfectly normal. Reminds me of when I was in the Navy drinking San Miguel beer from the Philippines. One bottle 2% alcohol the next 15%.

Andy Turtle Consiglio
2020-03-31 03:54:49

Chris D'Andrea big oofff...I bought the anycubic green and I'm wondering if that's why my prints are coming out poorly

Sean Croteau
2020-03-31 04:21:05

I had no issue with anycubic green. Did have problems with plate adhesion on Siraya easy but monoprice plate bond fixed that. Everything else is exposure tuning and making sure you shake the bottle well. Also if it’s too cold at the resin it may not react properly. All my prints are done in 63 F apartments.

William Tatum
2020-03-31 04:46:31

Sean Croteau yeah I know I have no problems at all with any of the any cubic resins it's only this Monoprice resin that I've had this particular issue with. Average ambient temperature in my house is 61° Fahrenheit to 69 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the time of day

John Chrapkowski
2020-03-31 05:11:32

You had me at stay away from monoprice ? ?

William Tatum

Andy Turtle Consiglio
2020-03-31 05:42:45

Nice! I'll check it out!

William Tatum
2020-03-31 05:57:36

Vincent Balmont
2020-03-31 11:31:51

Chris D'Andrea anycubic Green is my fav. Nothing but awesome over 3 bottles. Anycubic clear on the other hand wasted half, then mixed the rest with green to save it

Chris D'Andrea
