Anyone finishing using rock tumblers? Did try it for a day - wasn't able to see any change. Advice on the medium?

Did you add some brass bolts for it to rub off on?

Dmitry K Valberg
2020-03-29 15:37:12

No I did not, I guess I should try that!

Aaron Stalling
2020-03-29 17:37:45

Not worth the trouble. I tried all sorts of polishing media and couldn't get a good result in a reasonable amount of time (ran prints in it for up to 1 week). The best thing I've used is various grades of steel wool and my Dremel.

Dmitry K Valberg
2020-03-29 17:39:29

Thats my experience as well so far - even with sand and rocks. Looks like resin it self is a good helping agent in polishing other materials - but resin it self are almost immune to it...

Sean Montgomery
2020-03-30 04:41:28

I don't want to hear anyone complaining about how brittle the green resin is if you're all putting your finished prints in a rock tumbler ?

Dmitry K Valberg
2020-03-30 06:12:30

well glass is usually put in rock tumbler for polishing... its not exactly indication of "brittleness".

How many takes before you got that just right?

Alex Hendry
2020-03-29 06:54:03

Have you opened it up to check the connection between the board and screen? It looks like it might be time to replace it

Matt Kovach
2020-03-29 06:54:30

Alex Hendry I've only had it for a week and done maybe a dozen prints, do they normally go out that quickly?

Alex Hendry
2020-03-29 06:56:10

Matt Kovach No they don't, but if there was a surge well it was on it could have messed it up. I assume you've already tried unplugging and plugging the machine back in? Next I'd try opening it up and checking the connection

Matt Kovach
2020-03-29 06:56:48

Correct I have. I'll try that next. Thank you for the quick response

Alex Hendry
2020-03-29 07:00:28

Matt Kovach No problem. People on here have been helpful to me. So jus trying to pay it forward. Hopefully you get the screen working!

Alex Hendry
2020-03-29 07:01:26

Matt Kovach Oh and as a last ditch effort you can try updating the firmware on the machine

Matt Kovach
2020-03-29 07:01:56

Alex Hendry I read that online before making the post, sadly it didnt help ?

Alex Hendry
2020-03-29 07:02:28

Matt Kovach Damn, well hopefully the connection just needs a good push in or reset

Sean O'Hayer
2020-03-29 07:30:48

Just to make sure... Have you tried powering it off, unplugging it from the power supply for a few minutes, plugging it back in, and turning it back on?

Matt Kovach
2020-03-29 07:31:25

Sean O'Hayer that and updating firmware was the first thing I tried

Sean O'Hayer
2020-03-29 07:36:20

Matt Kovach ok. Sorry, I would have felt horrible if I didn't ask. It's the tech in me.

My next step would be to check the LCD, as Alex recommended.

Also, which firmware did you try?

Phlavio Spr

Bad contact on LCD flat cable for sure.

So, I have a bit of a problem with print volumes and the amount of resin used.

I am printing something that should, in total, use 9ml according to both Prusa and Chitubox.
Weighing it afterwards, it uses more like 11-12ml.
Im printing them in batches of 3, 35-40ml total.
Yet an almost full vat (measured at 60ml, so probably 50ml ) leaves the prints failing due to lack of resin.

Could it be that the last 10ml are not corretly located in the vat to finish the print, or is something else weird going on?

Any advice is welcome as I'm at a loss to whats happening

Is it hollow? Could some resin be trapped inside?

Aaron Shrive
2020-03-27 18:36:10

I don't think the volume calculations take into account any support material? are you weighing it after support material removal?

Jacob Palmer
2020-03-27 18:39:22

the supports are very minimal, and Im weighing the raft and adding a little extra for the rest of the supports. And I calculated it with support material in both chitu and prusa...

Jacob Palmer
2020-03-27 18:39:50

No, very thin parts, only about 3-4mm thick

Dave Dewees
2020-03-27 18:53:32

Probably inside the print. Like parts between hollowed areas. Sometimes when you Hollow the print, it seals off another part of the print that is also Hollow, but fills with resin because there are no holes for resin to escape from these sections. Check for that. It happens a lot on prints I've hollowed.

Jacob Palmer
2020-03-27 18:57:30

Nothing is hollow, the parts themselves are quite small, only 3-4mm thick.

Sander van Deijl
2020-03-27 18:57:57

How about the resin that sticks to the model and gets washed off afterwards? It is known the software estimates are showing less then used in real

You’re using resin on places the software doesn’t take in account

罗西晟
2020-03-27 19:03:22

Resin is stuck to the print, that is washed off, that can be quite substantial... so there is "loss" there.
Then there is resin that "sticks" to the buildplate, when your print is done, you will most certainly see some resin dripping off... leave it fo r long enough to regain most of it.
And then there is the resin that goes "on top of" the buildplate, since the build plate goes into the resin, there will always be some resin left on the non-print side....

Fred Bey
2020-03-27 19:03:41

Resin sticks to the model and the plate as it prints. That's what you have to clean off before final cure. Not a huge mystery.

Jacob Palmer
2020-03-27 19:06:50

Ahh, i think i have tricked myself by trying to be clever. I usually leave the prints waiting for an hour or so before cleaning to let the resin drip off. That would explain why there's resin left over but the print failed.

Thanks

Fred Bey
2020-03-27 19:08:09

I do that myself. I think the longest I've let them 'drip dry' was 2 weeks. lol

Hope you get things squared away!

Juan Pablo Bagnon
2020-03-27 23:41:30

add more resin mid print, just be careful not to create bubbles. and careful not to shake the printer during opening, is difficult to gently open the door sometimes

Not sticking to the platform:usually has 1 of 2 (or both) issues:
(however there is a third)

1) Z=0 not set tight enough
(from "home" go down until it is really tight! and then go up 0.3mm)

2) Base layer exposure not high enough
(try up base layer exposure with 10 seconds)

3) your build platform is greasy due to your skin touching contact surface.
(clean build plate contact surface (with alcohol) and let it dry, make sure no residue is left)

Randy Roones

Ok. I'm having a serious issue here. I printed my initial test print on the photonS however every other print I have attempted I can't get bed adhesion. I've looked at a lot of FAQs and have tried them all. Wtf is the issue. The last print had 10s exposure time, bed exposure at 100s, and several different models. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Robert Clauff I used a video that really helped, which said, you should be able to pull it out with a bit of force, but if you try to push it back it bends. So yours sounds a tiny bit too tight.

My first technical fail. The build plate came loose and unlevelled. So the base is uneven and there is a layer shift some 4 cm up. So will need to re-level and tighten that srew better.
At the same time I'm very impressed. Apart from the layer shift the print quality is great! (0.01 mm, 7 s main layers, 60 s baselayer, Anycubic Green Transparent that came with the machine.) Two spots where I need to move a support (Thank You 3DPrintingPro), but other than that actually a great print.
So thank you all for the advice you give here and on other platforms.
