I guess the hole to drain didn't work out and there is a lot of resin on the inside of this print. Do I need to drill a hole to drain it or will it be ok?

Dane Bennett
2020-03-31 11:36:07

You'll need to drain it. Otherwise it will split and leak.

Jason Smith
2020-03-31 11:36:35

Dane Bennett ok..so a small drill bit in the cranium it is

Chris Wolfe
2020-03-31 11:37:28

Drill.

Chris Wolfe
2020-03-31 11:37:55

Yeah, one day a while from now you will find a puddle of toxic resin where you dont want it hehe

Mike Bauers
2020-03-31 11:39:05

If you don’t drain it, it’s very likely to split the figure over time with a huge crack.

Dane Bennett
2020-03-31 11:39:45

Jason Smith you'll need to drill 2 holes actually. One to let resin out and the other to let air in and vice versa for when you wash it.

Michael Inwood
2020-03-31 11:39:49

Trepanation time.

Jason Smith
2020-03-31 11:40:20

Dane Bennett ok. Thanks

Justin Miller
2020-03-31 11:56:11

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-31 12:03:54

It'll blow up

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-31 12:04:39

Remember to put the hole on the plate side of the print, not the vat side

Mike Fatchett
2020-03-31 12:12:48

You need more than one hole I think when you print.

Sean Smith
2020-03-31 12:27:29

“The” hole? You only had 1?

Jason Smith
2020-03-31 12:34:38

Well I had prusa do the auto holes...I thought

Dan Andersson
2020-03-31 12:53:51

Make the holes as big as possible to get a nice flow of resin. I usually try to do 5 mm diameter holes. Works good and you can insert an uv led in the hole to cure the inside of the model.

James Swan
2020-03-31 13:44:50

I usually will drill 2 small holes and then use a can of air in one end and blow it out the other hole

Nipuna Gunarathne
2020-03-31 15:48:46

Sean Smith one hole will do. A second hole just makes cleaning inside in post easier. With some models it's impossible to place a useful second hole without ruining the model

Oksana Shevchenko
2020-03-31 16:15:32

James Swan blow it out the other hole ? ? ? ?

? Couldn't help myself

Michael Alexander Caddick
2020-03-31 16:30:31

Oksana Shevchenko just depends where you drill the holes.

Mi Ha
2020-03-31 16:49:52

Nipuna Gunarathne This really depends on the resin and orientation. If there is no way for the air to rush in it won't drain - similarly to plucking a straw with your finger after it's filled with water.

Nipuna Gunarathne
2020-03-31 16:53:21

Mi Ha yeah it'll be problematic if you only put one small hole

Luke Mason
2020-03-31 17:20:51

It will not be ok

Luke Mason
2020-03-31 17:21:37

The inside resin will seep thru. The model will also develop cracks

Allison Janssens
2020-03-31 18:26:20

Doesn't the resin flow down towards the vat?

Sean Smith
2020-03-31 21:12:48

Nipuna Gunarathne yeah one hole is always a risk. The lack of a hike also puts extra stress on the FEP when the print pulls away from the FEP. It can put a simple on the FEP if the area is narrow enough.

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-31 21:15:53

Allison Janssens yup! But the side on the vat is inherently open while printing a hollow section anyway, and the resin can't drain unless air can get in at the top to let the resin drain from the bottom.

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-31 21:21:42

Allison Janssens
2020-03-31 21:36:58

Stefan Giudici Woooow thank you so much for your explanation and example, I'll make sure to apply this new knowledge now thanks again!

Stefan Giudici
2020-03-31 21:38:13

No problem! Everybody gets that backwards in the beginning. That's why I prefer the term vent hole to drain hole

Richard Shapiro
2020-03-31 23:40:34

Drain it.

Shawn Barnes
2020-04-01 00:21:54

Stefan Giudici i always thought you were supposed to but 2 holes?

Shawn Barnes
2020-04-01 00:22:30

Is that...?

Stefan Giudici
2020-04-01 00:24:39

Depends on the print and what you can hide on the bottom. Some people advocate for a hole on each end but that was never the conventional wisdom and I don't see the point, I put all my holes on the vat side and get great results, if I have room for a big hole I'll do that, or if I need a few small holes instead (especially where the hollow geometry creates separate sections that'll build pressure, I'll do that too.

Jason Smith
2020-04-01 00:27:39

Shawn Barnes it's not, but now I want one. Lol it's a chibi Eleven

Shawn Barnes
2020-04-01 00:28:11

Christopher Fugate
2020-04-01 01:28:26

Drill and drain. The resin expands as it cures, and that much in there will crack that thing open like an egg if you don't.

Chris Roberts
2020-04-01 04:55:03

Drill it

James Peterson
2020-04-01 17:20:18

How the hell does this even happen to this degree? To me it seems logically impossible to have that much resin trapped in it. Like if you printed it standing up, you’d have to have over an inch deep of resin on the last horizontal it cure that closes the gap to have even half that amount.

These posts are boggling my mind!! Lol

I tried using chitubox for my photon printer. But my photon printer did not recognized the file. Using the stock software the extension is file.pws. but when I use chitubox is file.photon. any idea what can be the problem?

Hugh Jeriolas
2020-03-31 11:24:27

Upgrade your firmware

Wayne Mitchell
2020-03-31 11:27:45

Make sure both your photon and your chitubox have the latest firmware updates and it should recognize the files

Matty J. Lim
2020-03-31 11:29:59

Also change the printer from default to the anycubic.

Side question I changed the dimensions of the printer to match the photon but my yoda test print, whilst looking fine on app, came out rather weird and warped. I assume I have the x y z settings wrong. The application sets them up bizzarley as well can anyone confirm the x y z setting needed in chitubox for the photon

John Valdes
2020-03-31 11:57:05

Wayne Mitchell how do I update the printer?

Marcel Hansen
2020-03-31 12:40:55

Just open the file in photon workshop and resave it as pws, problem solved

Chris Peck
2020-03-31 12:44:27

What photon printer are you using? I am using the photon zero and I have to use Chitubox for all my supports and then save as STL then open in photon workshop to slice it into a .pw0 file because Chitubox doesn’t currently support the zero yet that I am aware.

John Valdes
2020-03-31 19:54:23

Marcel Hansen tried it did not work.

John Valdes
2020-03-31 19:55:11

Chris Peck I have the anycubic photon

Wayne Mitchell
2020-03-31 20:32:03

John Valdes there are some YouTube videos online, pretty simple though. Go to anycubic website and find your printer. At the bottom of the page there are firmware updates. Load the latest version on your thumb drive and move it to the printer. Find that file and select it to print. That should start the update

Stumped here - printed just fine the day before now started to be funky. Replaced FEp and re-leveled
Tried various orientation methods and various resin. Super inconsistent.

Just coming off the supports (.3mm contact area)

5 base layers with 90s exposure
10.5s exposure per .02mm layer and 5s off time

Victor Leznik
2020-04-01 02:31:40

Thoughts?

Charles Davenport
2020-04-01 06:44:35

Have you adjusted the support parameters? Perhaps the support does not have enough penetration? I had similar problems and went to heavy supports with minimal penetration. As you add supports, you can actually see if and where the support protrudes through the part. You can then edit that depth to gain max support without affecting the finish of the part. If you are unsure how to do this, PM me and send screen shots showing the process. Until then, Good Luck!

Victor Leznik
2020-04-01 06:54:10

Charles strange part is that it worked okay the months prior. No changing factors. LCD seems fine too based on the exposure check

Charles Davenport
2020-04-01 06:59:18

Victor Leznik Oh, Victor! I know what you mean! I have too little hair remaining to pull out over the unreliability of my Photon! I am seriously considering purchasing a different machine. One day my Photon prints fine, the next day, same print...a nd the machine laughs at me! And, I understand the time wasted in testing the same print time after time. Nevertheless, you might try giving those affected supports the "Heavy" treatment. I can't think of anything else in my limited experience. The same exact thing just happened to me. Oh, yes, consider adding more supports than needed. I've done that to good effect. It results in more post-print work, but at least you have a print! Good luck!

Victor Leznik
2020-04-01 07:57:43

Charles - I’ll give it a go! I’ve since updated the software to 4.2.18 with AA and thickened supports. Let’s see what happens! Hoping that dual rails and easy leveling will resolve unreliability as well

Anders Scot Hudson
2020-03-31 11:19:48

Heavy and medium supports... Plenty of them, no islands, 100% clean on Vaildator

Dan Andersson
2020-03-31 13:03:01

I would put lots of light supports around the coin outer edges. Round parts becomes oval when they are printed in air without support.

Another possibility is to print them straight on the bed.

Miles Redman
2020-03-31 13:27:33

Just print flat on the base ngl

Vincent Balmont
2020-03-31 18:30:58

I print them straight vertical

David Flowers
2020-04-01 05:29:11

No problems here...

Anders Scot Hudson
2020-04-01 06:47:54

that's pretty bad ass, what is your preferred method?

David Flowers
2020-04-01 06:50:24

Anders Scot Hudson flat on bed using the photon slicer..

Anders Scot Hudson
2020-04-01 07:15:37

Do you tweak your base layer settings to prevent expansion from overexposure?

David Flowers
2020-04-01 07:22:16

Anders Scot Hudson no, and they do get a small lip on them that I just sand off...

Ryan Moore
2020-04-01 14:22:31

Double check the dimensions for your printer are correct. The z would be something like 150mm not 155mm. There's a wrong set of dimensions floating about online which causes print warping.

Jim Nelson
2020-03-31 10:59:56

Alexandre Gilbert

Methanol aka wood alcohol aka methylated spirits aka Methyl hydrate aka fuel anti-freeze aka air brakes anti-freeze.
Under 10$/gallon and it works just as good as IPA.

Joe Papa Behre Behrend
2020-04-01 01:27:50

Jason Willis that is true, i think I’ll give it a shot in a little bit. I’m printing some prototypes for someone, so i don’t want to experience it now and screw something up ? ?

Jason Willis
2020-04-01 01:28:34

Thanks all for the help and suggestions for how to support this.

First attempt: printed at 25% of the original svg size on my Anycubic Photon resin printer. I used Anycubic black resin and then dry-brushed some pewter Rub n buff on it.

It came out a bit thin on one side and the back is pretty rough so I’m going to print another one soon.
