Window glass blocks some UV, better in direct sun.

Dan Andersson
2020-03-24 14:42:46

20-30 mins sounds very long. You do not want to over cure because the part gets more brittle.

Brandon White
2020-03-24 14:44:42

Dan Andersson it might be but it also depends on uv concentration, 15-20 in, with just sun light my prints are still sticky, its the main reason i switched to a uv light, but im sure in different locations its short times/longer times

Dan Andersson
2020-03-24 14:49:12

If you put your prints in direct sunlight, i have a very hard time to believe that a uv light would be faster. If you have a window between, then it is possible.
A cloudy day is easily beaten with uv light.

Despite Movement Control Order I managed to collect my Photon S from Fedex 40km away from my home crossing 2 cities, armed with an email from FedEx I pass thru police and army checkpoints without much problem.

I find that the shipping box is very useful as a protective shield in case we want to keep the resin in the tray for our next print later of the day, it complete seal off any light from affecting the resin.

I keep resin in my vat for weeks on end with no cover. No issues at all, I just give it a stir with that plastic spatula thing that comes with the machine.

Even went on vacation for 4 weeks with a print halfway through. Got home and all fine. Print turned out great, gave the resin a stir and started up the next print.

Sen Kun movement of essential activities only with reason and documents to support, original shipping address is my office which need to close down and shipper prohibit diversion so receiver must present in distribution centre to self collect, if u ask me then Anycubic may hv to answer as their CS told me they can’t change delivery address after the item been courier

To pick up my Ender 3 this afternoon, I had to go down to the pickup location (it's at a stationery store), hold my ID to the window, and then step behind a line on the sidewalk until the guy inside brought it outside, placed it on the ground, and then went back inside.

Hi, i'm italian and i can say photon was really used in this process, not for final product, but for prototypes... The final version is "professionally" printed in Nylon SLS. The photon in the image was used for fast prototype in the reverse engineering phase.

Shane Johnson
2020-03-24 14:15:02

Hahaha to all of jerks and know-it-alls that kept telling people in this forum to stop printing because it is bad... That is the worst case of "I know better than you because I'm not a scientist, but I play one on TV" that I've ever seen! And yes, I'm well aware these were prototypes.

Stefan Giudici

Micah Vestal
2020-03-24 21:06:25

Nobody was ever upset about anyone printing a prototype. What we don't need is for people to print a ton of these on their Photon and send them to their local hospital, where they will go straight into the trash.

Kayo Michiels
2020-03-24 21:24:07

Badly spaced out the parts, the printbed could have easily housed 6 or 8 of them

Shane Johnson
2020-03-24 21:39:23

Richard Humble haha read my whole post... I'm well aware of that. Just goes to show how many Headline Heros there are these days...

Shane Johnson
2020-03-24 21:43:06

My point..people... is that you telling somebody that they cannot do something like this is asinine. The authorities at the hospital will let them know what they can and can't do. You are not the authority and by you telling people that they can't do s omething to try to help this pandemic tears other people down.

If somebody wants to help by doing something and it makes them feel better, then let them. they might also realize at some point that they need to use what they created as a prototype without so many assholes ripping them apart.. Stop tearing people down and let people feel better about trying to help.

Shane Johnson
2020-03-24 21:48:45

Stefan Giudici I saw quite a few people just flat out tell someone that they are wasting their time in a pretty mean way. That isn't how people should be acting right now. Encouragement is what should lead people. Keyboard Warriors are damaging other people's mental health and right now that is not a good idea (it never really is...)

Richard Humble
2020-03-24 22:42:48

Shane Johnson apologies I did not read your full post.

But when someone turns up at a hospital with a ropey design of mask printed from known hazardous material in an unproven way and says this is ace use it... Guess what... You have no idea what risk you have exposed those people to, long or short term. That is not fair.

Print stuff that is not in the breathing air path, those face shield holders for example, they have a far lower risk. They are also more use as the virus can enter through they eyes too.

If you can't cope with criticism then don't ask for opinions. Not every idea is a good one and deservedly gets a kicking.

Shane Johnson
2020-03-24 23:49:09

Richard Humble that is such a wrong way of looking at it. There is a MAJOR difference between constructive criticism and criticism. There has been very little of the former...

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez
2020-03-24 23:59:45

Some of those things being printed could cause more harm. Plus, you are trying up someone's time that should be helping others. The CORRECT way to go about it would be to have spoken with the hospital in advance to see if there was something to do. Not just just print a 100 items that can't be used.

I haven't commented on any of this until now. But I'm sorry, you are wrong. Many of these people are causing more issues. If they want to help then that is great, ask the hospital how you can help. If people want to help, there are plenty of ways.

Shane Johnson
2020-03-25 00:10:28

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez Hahahaha!!! How many prints have you printed that go unused...?

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez
2020-03-25 04:14:20

Will Policarpio
2020-03-25 07:00:49

Is plant based resin not good for this model?

Shane Johnson
2020-03-25 09:03:57

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez yes to "not just print 100 items that can't be used."

Shane Johnson
2020-03-25 09:09:46

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez and please read the damn article... They brought their NON-production, RESIN models into the hospital... Oh no! They did testing IN a hospital!? What??.........

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez
2020-03-25 09:54:50

Shane Johnson First off, you need take a few deep breaths cuz you are flipping out.

second, the comment about printing items that wont be used purely is about wasting one's personal time on on thing, when doing something else would be more beneficial. Which is why i also mentioned asking the hospital for what they want first, not just printing something you thought they might need and then finding out they didnt. It could be as easy as a simple phone call. So whatever prints i make that i dont use really has nothing to do with the topic at all, because im not judging "wasted" plastic. Im specifically talking about hospital aid.

Third, i dont care about the article. I am not responding to the article. I am responding to your comments regarding people's criticism. They are very valid criticisms, for the reasons listed above.

TL;DR If you want to help, ask them what they need first. Dont make assumptions and waste your time or theirs.

Shane Johnson
2020-03-25 10:04:24

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez I'm actually as calm as can be... ?‍♂️ I'm just calling you out on your inability to comprehend words...

tldr; let people do what they want; let them feel good for once, and for God's sake...read the article before you spout off rediculous crap. People can waste their own time the way they wish.

Erik Jonathan Gonzalez
2020-03-25 10:51:06

haha seems more like you didn't comprehend anything i said...

But i can see you are being purposely obtuse and have no intention of actually listening to other people.

Good luck with life.

Daniel Kelly

Try 8 seconds at 0.025 layer height. I find most of the resins I've tried an 8 second exposure gives the best results. I've tried as low as 6 second but tend to get more cases of supports not connecting to the model and so partial print failure. 7 second exposure is half way between - less failures than 6 second but still some.

Sam Applegarth
2020-03-24 17:45:49

Daniel Kelly I’d agree with trying 8 second exposure, but not with a .025 layer height. It’s best to do layer heights in .01 increments, as that’s what the machine handles best. Just try the new exposure time with whatever layer height you’re at now and see what results you get.

Sam Applegarth
2020-03-24 17:46:28

Also would love to know where you got these rats. Loving the variety of body and tail positions.

Daniel Kelly
2020-03-24 18:19:28

Sam Applegarth I keep hearing this about the increments but I don't understand where it comes from. I've been printing commercially at 0.25 for years without any issues.

Fred Bey

The Z step motor steps in .010mm increments. If you have a .xx5 layer height, the motor has to micro step. That has inconsistent results. It basically guesses where the half step is, and that's what you get. better to use .xx0 layer heights.

Daniel Kelly
2020-03-25 06:40:19

Fred Bey please don't take this as me being funny or anything but I'm hearing this a lot, but never with any scientific or technical evidence. I've been printing at 0.025 micron layers since 2016 and what I'm seeing doesn't show any sign of issues (as ide from where I'm experimenting with cure times or I've tried to shortcut supports). My first 3d printer has a number of layer height presets to select and the one I used for the best balance of time Vs quality was 0.025. I've stuck with it ever since, even on other printers and have to date had no issues with layer lines being visible or printing anomalies or anything.

Fred Bey
2020-03-25 06:46:48

Can't speak to any other printers you've been using since 2016, but the photon Z stepper motor steps in .010mm increments. You can certainly get motors that step in smaller increments, but the photon is a budget printer.

If it works for you, keep at it. Probably hard to see when your layer is .023 or .028, but it's more than likely happening.

Zachary T Maheu
2020-03-25 09:02:10

i've been running .02 layers at 6 seconds with a lot of success and getting crip details but i do have to take some time making sure the supports are correct. I will normally anchor the model with a few medium supports then use the thin for everything else.

Cory Lautzenheiser
2020-03-25 09:38:21

Zachary T Maheu ahh. Okay i may try that as well

Zachary Chin

you can have roughly half the amount of surface area contact between the model and build plate than the currently printed model layer adhering to the FEP film... This ratio is dependant on the weight and will need increasing amounts of more surface for the build plate as the object gets heavier. I would add supports along the sides just cause it would look really easy to sand off and keep any guesswork away.

There was just enough room for it next to my Creality Ld-001 in my enclosure. My ld-001 uses wifi to send files so I just had to make a little door on the side of the enclosure to access the power switch and USB on the Photon. I also removed the hinges so I can remove the lid to get into the printer since there's no room to open it normally. I did the same on the ld-001.

I'll be getting it printing tomorrow!

Chad Elstad

Its dark...while I loved it I had a few complaints that it was difficult to prime over: it wasn’t something I had a problem with personally...all mine primed fine.
