Scimitar sword in 1/6 scale for a Saracen Warrior I’m putting together. Not having a great deal of success with printing swords. They either come out too thin or I have a print fail. Fingers crossed for this one.
Just finished printing a couple of Persian style helmets for him too, curing in the sun here at the moment.

What's the easiest way to remove structures from the print without damaging them..I herd of hot water I dont know if that's before the curing or after idk

very hot water before curing

Jim Nelson
2020-03-22 09:27:26

Hot water before and the longer you soak generally the easier it is to remove them.

you shouldnt print them like that, search for yt vids like auto supporting in prusa slicer, and you will see the orienting difference! The settings for different resins can be found in the “resin spreadsheet” just search for that and u will find it

Chris Thiessen
2020-03-22 09:30:49

As Papp said, get them away from the build plate for better results.

John Sparkman
2020-03-22 09:40:31

I'll try I been using chitubox I'll try prusa slicer next

Seeing more and more ppl looking at printing masks. It's a noble gesture but these printers are not the tools for the job.
The materials are not biocompatible. If you can find a biocompatible material, the next problem is they're rigid. A rigid mask is not going to seal. You can add a seal but the seal needs to be biocompatible too. The seals I'm seeing ppl add are quite thin.
If you're lucky you may get it to seal to your face but it won't remain sealed when you move your face or your jaw. Also facial anthro differs greatly between ppl, it won't fit for others.

Masks need to either be all soft or textile materials or if it has a rigid frame, also have a large compliant soft seal. Look at dust masks and CPAP masks.

Perhaps a better idea is to print a mould to mould the masks out of biocompatible silicone.

There's still the problem of how you're going to provide a proper level of filtration. You could adapt to an off the shelf filter. If you hack together some do it yourself filter you may do more harm than good

Given how deep the shit is with shortages that the CDC is even asking frontliners to make do with bandanas (!), I say carry on printing. Anything is better than nothing.

Biocombatibilty. Photopolymers once fully cured are just plastics. No worries about leaching we're not talking about stic king it in your mouth or implants.

https://www.researchgate.net/....../311422937......

Rigidity and sealing. Choice of resin is key. Flex resin, etc. are available.

Filtration. Again, anything is better than nothing. Because, viral load.

https://mobile.twitter.com/....../status/1239560638239838215

Finally, wearing a mask is not all about protecting yourself. Don't go getting a false sense of security with one. All it does is reduce the risk for you and (if you're asymptomatic) everyone around you. The more people that wear a mask, the better.

John Driggers
2020-03-22 14:23:09

CDC is telling HCP that a bandana is a last resort in the absence of PPE. What we are printing is the same, except you are proposing to use photopolymers which contain unknown monomers.

Luke Klinkenberg
2020-03-22 14:29:41

The material on your link seems ok at in least short term. For sure if things got desperate I'd wear whatever i could get my hands on.

Sure it's not on your mouth but it is in the wet air path which is subject to tighter regulations than just skin contact as it reaches mucosal membranes. You shouldn't fit these to someone effected by the virus in case it was an irritant and worsened the pneumonia

Sen Kun
2020-03-22 15:40:57

Absolutely.

" The median-fit factor of the homemade masks was one-half that of the surgical masks. Both masks significantly reduced the number of microorganisms expelled by volunteers.. "

Homemade masks as an alternative to commercial face masks. Better than nothing. This is the situation no?

John Driggers
2020-03-22 15:57:10

Sen Kun that a sewing machine and a tshirt is better option? Yes.

Any advice on why the supports are detaching on the left side of the print? This has happened a few times now. I just leveled the bed using the paper method. Thanks!

Not enough exposure time possibly.

Christopher Fugate
2020-03-22 09:05:59

It's too big of a flat surface parallel to the base. When it lifts up the weight of the liquid resin is ripping it off the supports.

Angle it so the resin can drain off a slope.

Jack Burton
2020-03-22 09:06:52

Christopher Fugate I’ll give that a shot, thanks!

James Capps
2020-03-22 09:08:07

Had something like this happen to me earlier and it was because I had hollowed my model and my drainage holes where not big enough and I got to much suction. I would check for any cuping in your slice. Also you might want to lean back your model and use prusa slicer to create your supports.

Christopher Fugate
2020-03-22 09:08:15

Jack Burton Whenever possible, do not have large flat surfaces pointing towards the print bed. I'm honestly impressed it printed as well as it did!

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-22 15:20:21

Put in stronger supports, medium or heavy..

Jack Burton
2020-03-22 15:21:00

Daniel Kottmair is there a guideline on when to use light, medium, and strong supports?

Jack Burton
2020-03-22 15:21:56

Christopher Fugate thanks! Restarted the print and it’s looking better so far. Will report back with findings ?

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-22 15:42:26

Jack Burton No. Common sense and experience I guess, i learned also the little I know through trial & error, and I'm far from done! ;-)

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-22 15:46:15

Heavy when they need to carry A LOT of load (or strong angular forces, don't forget about those!), I also like to support the corners of slabs with a medium..

Jack Burton
2020-03-22 22:02:17

Tilting the model was the answer, thank you! It seems like I should be able to print the model way bigger than Chitubox lets me. Do I need to adjust the build volume for the Photon S or is the LCD smaller than the build plate?

Amazon seems to be out of 500 ml Anycubic gray resin. It's not even an option and all the other colors have gone up in price to $25 (so now $50 for 1000 ml makes sense) What other resins have you had good luck with? I'm looking specifically at the Elegoo but don't want to have to go through a whole calibration mess.

Anycubic green has awesome detail but runs a bit brittle.

David Belshaw
2020-03-22 08:28:08

I use it. Im just careful with it.

Tony Shadman

Use Siraya Fast Tech. $35 for 1000ml

Dan Gump
2020-03-22 08:30:50

I switched a while ago from Anycubic to Elegoo. I think it smells less and its a bit cheaper. Although in the US anyway Elegoo resin prices for 500ml used to be 16.99 then 17.99 and now 19.99. 1000 is actually 36.99 right now so I just ordered a few of those but they won't ship for at least a week.

Jason Pedersen
2020-03-22 08:37:27

Amazon ran out of Elegoo ABS Grey, which I love, so just ordered Siraya Tech Fast. We'll see how that goes.

Use the calibration finder to save time and resin.

(also Amazon is holding of on stocking non-essential items right now, so it might be a while before we see resin back on their shelves.)

Byron Taylor
2020-03-22 08:38:12

calibration finder? The spreadsheet?

Byron Taylor
2020-03-22 08:42:24

Looks like they're running out of everything. I ordered some Elegoo because they said it was in stock

Stephen Hill
2020-03-22 09:01:57

Seconding this. It does run about a second faster than the anycubic grey though.

Stephen Hill
2020-03-22 09:03:46

No, there's actually a printable tool that you print to check resin. For classic photon or Mars you can google 'ResinXP Finder.' for the new photon or photon S you'll use the R.E.R.F. file that I don't have handy.

Byron Taylor
2020-03-22 09:52:06

All the RERFs I'm finding seem to be for PhotonS

Dave Dewees

I've switched to siraya fast grey and it works great w same settings I had for Anycubic. I tried elegoo but it wasn't cooperating so I sent it back
