Reaching out for some help. this is the first calibration test i run. its Ameralabs AMD 3 (my high detail resin for very very very fine scale buildings with lots of details around0.1mm and below).

can you advise what you think the best exposure time would be? im verging on 4secs maybe 4.5?

please let me know

really? can you explain please as i want to make sure im understanding this properly. i can see more fine details in column 2

Jim if you look at the bars extending from the circle at column 2 they are not clean cut at all. You want the column that has a well formed circle with the dot inside and the columns next to it being clear and not bulging. Column 4 is where things start looking good.

So just checking with everyone. After your print you are all removing supports and then sanding if needed BEFORE uv curing, correct?

Remove support before post-curing, but I’d sand after post-curing. Altough, I don’t need to sand.

Some people do, some don't. I like to on model that are tough. If the model has small parts that might bend before curing I'll cure it first.

Ryan Walmsley
2020-03-29 22:29:10

I see a mixture of things, some say to cure with supports some say not. I usually wash with supports, then cure without supports but may try with supports as one delicate model fell apart when trying to remove them.

Matt Stone
2020-03-29 22:29:46

Always removing before curing. The group suggested putting it in hot water before pulling off the supports and holy shit.. it works so well. I do t have scarring on the prints, they don't break the prints. It's amazing.

Ernest Sandridge Ill
2020-03-29 22:44:53

Yeah, warm water for a few seconds and it practically peels off. It's satisfying like picking a scab

Gary Slovinsky
2020-03-29 23:32:59

Definitely the best bet on delicate and non-delicate prints is clean then warm to hotish water and supports almost fall off on their own. THEN cure. Sand as needed. Cutting those supports off after curing causes micro spears bouncing around the room.

Also check your contact depth into the model. Me, I only go .12 into the model.

Robert Clauff
2020-03-30 04:23:45

Gary Slovinsky ok. That being said I just finished my first print and the detail is amazing, however with the supports off there is still some post.
What do you use for supports setting on yours? On my Tevo I would have good prints, but my supports would make it look like shit until I found out the right settings and now my prints are almost flawless. Looking to do the same with my resin prints. ?

Robert Clauff i use a contact depth of .12 and mostly med and small supports. BUT I don’t print minis or (at this point) extremely high detail. The most detailed item I’ve made was an agents of shield/hydra combined coin, a couple mm bigger than a quar ter. Printed vertical.
But I still stand by ipa/mean green wash then warm to hot water for initial support removal then cure. But as you mentioned having the right settings is key. My settings wouldn’t help you, i print more simplistic designs which require less finessing than most other prints.

Gary Slovinsky
2020-03-30 04:53:41

Robert Clauff (addendum) I’m confused here. On your post to me was most of it related to FDM prints? I’m only asking since your last sentence says you were looking to do the same with resin prints?

As a side note: I finished printing off the easy be d leveling adapter (photon) and i neglected to remove the supports first in hot water, I then cured it. And after removing thr supports was a nightmare and the thumb screws look like crap.

Robert Clauff
2020-03-30 09:38:46

Gary Slovinsky yes i was talking about my Tevo Tornado. I want to get my resin prints to the point where I hardly have to touch it after I cure it.

O Sole Mio ........ I ordered my Photon S together with a UV curing box, but as I monitored the logistics it came in to my country and now shipped out back to China perhaps due to the limited lockdown, anyway I am no complaint as its better this then I have the curing box but not printer ? ? ? ? without curing box I have my lovely sun ☀️

O sole mio........

So after doing my first print last night which was alright until I snapped the leg re.oving support. My photon has now developed 2 problems today. 1 it pops up with memory card error. If I tap the confirm it works fine if not it stops the print. A pain as I have to sit the watching it. 2 it randomly drops power for about 1 sec then boots back up.

Anyone come across these problems before? Any help is greatly appreciated

First use a new USB stick if you're using the one that came with the printer. Second make sure if you're plugged into a surge protector, 1. It's new 2. It's not overworked

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:53:26

the USB isn't new but is a sandisk one. and currently plugged straight into the mains in the garage. only had the light and printer running today compared to last night with the heater and laptop as well. or do you mean i need a surge protector?

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:55:09

Joe Bone sounds like you need a new surge protector for just the printer. This happens a lot on normal printers and large current drawing devices

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:56:02

will have a look and sort one suprised as it printed fine last night but not today

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:56:52

Joe Bone is it plugged directly into the wall?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:57:53

yeah directly into a mains socket.

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 21:59:01

Joe Bone GFI or regular?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 21:59:59

Regular 3 pin outlet

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 22:08:55

Joe Bone ok then that shouldn't be it. Let's talk about temperature. You said it's in the garage. Does the power brick have a sufficient amount of airflow across it or is it buried behind a counter or something?

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 22:17:00

Sat on the counter behind not a huge amount of air flow but also bloody cold out there atm

Jason Willis
2020-03-29 22:23:05

Joe Bone so I would guess, either it's a fluke or a possibly bad power supply. If it's the power supply it'll start happening more often

Joe Bone
2020-03-29 22:31:58

Happened about 4 times today. Have given up for now until I got advice Haha. Will get looking for a new power supply was a secondhand photon anyway.

Ok folks, I need some input on a couple things.

Orientation, this is what Prusa Slicer keeps giving me. Not sure on the overhangs if they will work or not.

2nd thing is still the same model, just scaled up. I need to cut it in half to fit in the Photon, any tips to keep it from warping all to hell?

3rd i see a couple spots where the supports have gone through the model, any way I can reduce that?

I would try laying it flat and let chitubox do the supports. See where it exceeds the boundaries and cut there, you'll stand a better chance of no warping. Your print time will be quicker. Choose the side for supports that will be least visible.

Yessik Ziiq
2020-03-30 13:42:52

That overhang will print, a helpful tip is that a standing X shape will almost always print, so a perfect 45 degrees is pretty safe as long as you have good build plate adhesion.

Here's a hint: if liquid resin seeped into your tools (clipper etc) while clipping off supports and got them somewhat stuck and no IPA or greasing treatment helps, try pouring some acetone over it and excercise them! My spring-opening clipper opens again now!

Aceton will break thr resin down.

Daniel Kottmair
2020-03-29 19:14:17

Angus Sanders good to know. Apparently even cured resin, cause the IPA did NOTHING here, so it must've already cured..

Angus Sanders
2020-03-29 19:36:12

Daniel Kottmair yea just leave it to soak, takes a bit of time but it breaks it down.

Angus Sanders IPA? I tried soaking for hours to no effect..

Angus Sanders
2020-03-29 19:43:35

Daniel Kottmair no leave it soaking in acetone. IPA doesn’t do anything really
